The University of Iowa Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity has
announced six Catalyst Award Seed Grant recipients for 2009-10, which
include a College of Public Health project.

Cognitive Training Lowers the Risk of Worsening Depressive Symptoms
The risk of worsening depressive symptoms, one of the most common
mental health problems experienced by older adults, can be
significantly reduced by cognitive training aimed at maintaining and
improving the speed of information processing, according to a team of
University of Iowa researchers.

UI Injury Prevention Researcher Receives National Honor
JOHN LUNDELL, deputy director of the University of Iowa Injury
Prevention Research Center, was recently honored with the President's
Award from the State and Territorial Injury Prevention Directors

‘Doctor Drain’ Threatens Rural Health Care
(The Iowa Independent, 3/13/2009)
Rural areas are experiencing physician shortages in Iowa and
nationwide. KELLEY DONHAM, professor of occupational and environmental
health, likes the “grow your own” approach. “You get people who are
oriented toward primary care who are from rural areas,” he said. "They
have to have rural mentors and have a rural experience. They need to
have a sociological connection to that population."

Wolinsky: Brain Exercises Lessen Depression
(Sacramento Business Journal, 3/17/2009)
Researchers found that a brain fitness program, measured initially for
its impact on cognitive abilities in older adults, also had a
significant beneficial impact on symptoms of depression. "Earlier
findings have shown that these particular brain exercises improve
speed of processing, health related quality of life and ability to
engage in activities required for independent living," said FRED
WOLINSKY, professor and John W. Colloton Chair in Health Management
and Policy, who led the study.

Hancock County, Consortium for Cancer Control Team Up
(Forrest City Summit, The Britt News-Tribune, 3/17/2009)
Hancock County health data shows a high incidence of colon cancer with
a large percentage of it diagnosed in late stages. For this reason the
county public health department is teaming up with the Iowa Consortium
for Comprehensive Cancer Control, a coalition between the Iowa
Department of Public Health and the UI College of Public Health, to
increase the awareness for early CRC screenings.

The Students on the Bus Are Safe, Safe, Safe
(The Dubuque Telegraph Herald, 3/19/2009)
A recent study by CPH researchers found that school buses are among
the safest forms of road transportation in Iowa. "Our main finding is
the school bus is safe compared to other passenger cars in the state
of Iowa," said JINGZHEN YANG, assistant professor of community and
behavioral health. The study found that school buses have low crash
rates, and the majority of those crashes don't result in injuries.

Celebration of Excellence to Honor UI Women
"Celebration of Excellence and Achievement Among Women,” the UI’s
annual tribute to the accomplishments of all women at the University,
will be held April 1, 3:30-5:30 p.m. in the Senate Chamber, Old
Capitol Museum. KERI HORNBUCKLE, professor of civil and environmental
engineering who holds a secondary appointment in public health, will
be recognized with the "Distinguished Acheivement Award."

Oberley Memorial Free Radical Symposium to Be April 3-4
The Oberley Memorial Free Radical Symposium will honor Larry Oberley’s
contributions to science, educational, and research programs. Oberley
was a UI professor of free radical and radiation biology. The
symposium will be held in 1103 MERF (Atrium) on April 3-4 with a focus
on Oberley’s favorite topic -- the biology of superoxide and
superoxide dismutase.

Research Grants Available as Part of Stimulus Act
As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, NIH has
designated at least $200 million in FYs 2009-2010 for a new initiative
called the "NIH Challenge Grants in Health and Science Research" to
fund 200 or more grants.

Student News

UI to Begin Offering New Certificate in Sustainability
To help put students on a path toward becoming effective leaders and
agents of change for sustainability, the UI will begin offering a new
Certificate in Sustainability in fall 2009. To meet the certificate's
requirements, students must complete 24 semester hours of course work
that includes three introductory core courses, four electives from a
designated list, and one project course.

Scheibel Earns Student Travel Grant
PHIL SCHEIBEL, a UI senior working in the Center for Emerging
Infectious Diseases, has been awarded a student travel grant to attend
the American Society for Microbiology's General Meeting in
Philadelphia May 17-21. He will present his poster, "Prevalence,
Antibiotic Resistance, and Molecular Characterization of
Staphylococcus aureus in State Fair Swine." Scheibel began working as
a virology laboratory intern in the CEID during summer 2008, then
joined Associate Professor Tara Smith’s bacteriology lab. He is
currently enrolled in an External Practicum in Psychology.
