Report Breaks Down Injuries in Iowa

More than four Iowans die daily from injuries, the leading cause of
death among young Iowans and fifth leading cause of death overall in
the state, according to a report released by the Iowa Department of
Public Health and UI Injury Prevention Research Center.

Blog: MRSA in Hogs Has Unknown Effect on Human Health

MRSA, a type of Staph resistant to broad-spectrum antibiotics, has
recently been discovered in pigs and farm workers on farms in Iowa and
Illinois, in study by TARA SMITH, associate professor of epidemiology.
"That’s our next direction of research, to really understand a little
more about this particular strain [ST398], and see if it’s really a
cause for concern as far as human disease goes," she said.

Alcohol Consumption in Sights of City, UI

As the UI ponders how to curb binge drinking, leaders cite a study by
PETER NATHAN, professor emeritus of community and behavioral health,
that found UI students engage in binge drinking at rates far
surpassing averages. Seventy percent of UI students engaged in
high-risk drinking in the past two weeks in comparison with 44 percent
of college students nationally.

Smith Weighs in on Gardasil Vaccine

Gardasil, a vaccine developed to protect against human papillomavirus
(HPV), has been the subject of debate about its side effects, cost, and effectiveness. Some health professionals continue to advocate for its
role in protecting women against cancer. "Whatever hype there is for
the vaccine, if we have the means to prevent cancer that affects women’s reproductive health and well-being, we should do it," said ELAINE SMITH, professor of epidemiology.

Op-Ed: Take Steps to Reduce Burden of Injury

Guest columnist, Geoffrey Lauer, director of the Brain Injury
Association of Iowa, doesn't like the word accident, because he feels
the word suggests what happens is unpreventable and resulting injuries
are inevitable. The truth is many unintentional injuries can be
prevented, he said citing "The Burden of Injury in Iowa" report released by
the UI Injury Prevention Research Center.

Injuries a Leading Cause of Death in Iowa

Injuries are a leading cause of death among Iowans, and smaller
counties, those with populations less than 10,000, had the highest
injury-caused death rate when compared with counties with populations
of more than 50,000, according to "The Burden of Injury in Iowa"
report released by the UI Injury Prevention Research Center.

Spring Colloquium to Cover Medical Home
The Institute for Public Health Practice’s Spring Colloquium, titled
“Medical Homes & Role of Public Health,” will be April 17 from 10
a.m. to 1 p.m. in the John W. Eckstein Medical Research Building,
Seebohm Conference Room. Continuing education units will be available

Mason to Host Presidential Budget Forums
UI President Sally Mason will host two Presidential Budget Forums for UI
faculty and staff on April 8. The first session will take place from 10 to 11
a.m. in the Bijou Theatre (Room 166) of the IMU. A second session will
take place from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Prem Sahai Auditorium (Room 1110A)
of the Medical Education and Research Facility (MERF). Mason will provide
a brief overview of the budget challenges facing the university before
taking suggestions and comments from attendees.

CPHSA Encourages Participation in Heart Walk April 25CPH Student Association has started a team for the Start! Heart Walk,
an American Heart Association signature fundraising event. The walk
will be April 25 at 8 a.m. at S.T. Morrison Park, Coralville. The walk
promotes physical activity and heart-healthy living. Proceeds will
benefit medical research and educational programs in Johnson County.
CPH students, faculty, and staff interested in joining the team can
email Erica Spies at erica-spies@uiowa.edu.
