UI WISE Program Awards Travel Grants
The University of Iowa Women in Science and Engineering program
has announced its Dr. Eunice Schuytema Beam Travel Grant Program
spring semester award recipients, including LEI HUA, a biostatistics
doctoral student.

UI Receives International Training Grant for Underrepresented Students
The University of Iowa has been awarded a five-year, $1.2 million
grant from the National Center on Minority Health and Health
Disparities to continue its international training program for
students from health disparities populations who are pursuing research
careers in the health sciences.

Agricultural Medicine Course Offered June 8-12
Iowa's Center for Agricultural Safety and Health and the Great Plains
Center for Agricultural Health will host a training program for health
care professionals who treat and help prevent occupational illnesses
and injuries on the farm June 8-12 at hotelVetro & Conference Center,
201 S. Linn St., Iowa City.

Peter Nathan Featured as "Face of UI"
(The Daily Iowan, 4/3/2009)
PETER NATHAN, community and behavioral health professor emeritus and
former interim UI president and provost, was featured in the Daily
Iowan's "Faces of the UI" series. Nathan has 40 years experience
conducting alcohol-related research, and he continues to weigh in on
the subject as a member of the UI's Alcohol Steering Committee.
Nathan's wife, ANNE HELENE SKINSTAD, associate professor of community
and behavioral health, also appears in the story.

UI Center Focuses on Injuries, Prevention
(The Daily Iowan, 4/3/2009)
The UI Injury Prevention Research Center — created in 1990 — seeks
funding for research to understand how injuries occur, provides
information for policymakers and practitioners, and offers training on
injury prevention. “Many colleges of public health don’t have training
in injury prevention,” said CORINNE PEEK-ASA, director of the center.
“Here [at the UI], we have one of the top training programs in
the country.”

Tests Could Tell When Alzheimer's Patients Should Stop Driving
(The Associated Press, 4/7/2009)
JEFF DAWSON, associate professor of biostatistics, and colleagues
recruited early-stage Alzheimer's patients to take neuropsychological
tests and a road test and compared performance to that of older drivers
without dementia. Alzheimer's drivers committed more driving mistakes.
Tests that assess cognitive, visual, and motor skills helped predict who
would perform worse. The Associated Press story was published by many
news outlets, including salon.com, The New York Times, The Seattle
Times, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner
in Alaska, the London Free Press, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune in Florida,
the Daily Herald in Illinois, and the Boston Globe.

College, University Officials Discuss CPH Academic Building
Dean Sue Curry, along with architects and project managers for the
College of Public Health’s new academic building, met with residents
of the Manville Heights neighborhood in Iowa City on April 1 to review
progress on the facility. Construction of the college’s academic home
is currently underway at the site of the former UI International
Center, adjacent to the Manville Heights neighborhood.

Global Health Exhibit at Hardin Library April 15-24
“Against the Odds: Making a Difference in Global Health” is a
traveling exhibition using historical and contemporary photographs to
highlight the role of communities in improving health at home and
around the world. Hosted by the College of Public Health in
partnership with Hardin Library for the Health Sciences, the exhibit
is free, open to the public and will be on display April 15-24 near
the library’s third floor entrance.

CPH Marks National Public Health Week
As part of National Public Health Week 2009, College of Public Health
representatives traveled to the Iowa Capitol on April 8 to meet with
state legislators.

Speaker to Address Time, Sustainability on April 13
John de Graaf, executive director of Take Back Your Time, an
organization challenging time poverty and overwork in North America,
will present "Time and Sustainability" on April 13 at 7 p.m. in the
Pomerantz Center, Room C20. His visit also includes a free, public
screening of his latest film, "What's The Economy For, Anyway?" at
2:30 p.m., April 13 at the Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center.

Johnson County Health and Human Services Open House April 18
The Johnson County Department of Public Health invites community
members to stop by the new County Health and Human Services Building
on 855 S. Dubuque Street during its open house on April 18 from 1 to 4
p.m. The new building is a resource to better serve the residents of
Johnson County.

Lecture by People Powered to Offer Creative Environmental Projects
People Powered, visiting artists in Intermedia, will be the subject of
a free public lecture at 7:30 p.m. April 23, in Room 2217 of the UI
Seamans Center. People Powered's projects confront environmental
challenges with art. For example, "Soil Starter: Community Composting
Network" is a composting program; and "Loop Limited: Recycled Paint"
focuses on the recycling of household paint.

Interdisciplinary Health Research Abstracts Due April 13
The annual poster session sponsored by the Interdisciplinary Health
Group Student Poster Committee will take place April 23 with
abstracts due April 13. Abstracts and posters may be presented
even if they have been or will be used for other presentations. The
event gives all students an opportunity to present health-related
research and encourages interaction between heath disciplines.
