Community Invited to View Global Health Exhibit April 15-24"Against the Odds: Making a Difference in Global Health," a traveling
exhibition highlighting the role of communities in improving health at
home and around the world, will be on display April 15-24 at Hardin
Library for the Health Sciences.

Experts Testify on Proposed Alcohol Establishment Zoning
UI experts, including PETER NATHAN, community and behavioral health professor emeritus, provided research data about the relationship
between alcohol outlet density, alcohol consumption, and alcohol-related negative consequences during a presentation before the Iowa City
Planning and Zoning Commission. The commission is considering an amendment to the city's code that would establish minimum spacing requirements between establishments that serve or sell alcohol.

Atchison Recognized for Work on Health Care Access
CHRISTOPHER ATCHISON, CPH associate dean for public health practice
and director of the University Hygienic Laboratory, was selected to
receive the "Underserved Champion of the Year Award" from the Iowa/Nebraska Primary Care Association.

Proposed Zoning to Change Alcohol Access in Iowa City
(The Daily Iowan, 4/17/2009)
The Iowa City Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously passed a
measure that would prevent new bars from opening within 500 feet of
another. Experts, including PETER NATHAN, community and behavioral
health professor emeritus, presented research findings to the
commission. The measure will need approval from the City Council.

Spring Colloquium Explores Medical Homes, Public Health
“Medical Homes and the Role of Public Health” formed the theme for the
2009 Spring Colloquium held April 17 on the UI campus. Sponsored by
the Institute for Public Health Practice, the colloquium explored the role
of public health in the emerging medical home arena.

Public Invited to Forum on Domestic, Global Diversity April 19
Bridging Domestic and Global Diversity, or The Bridge, a program
fostering student initiatives that bring together underrepresented
domestic groups and international students, is holding an open forum
at 5 p.m. April 19 in Room 1117 University Capitol Centre. The forum
is designed to generate conversations about diversity and promote
ways students can increase the connections between domestic and global
diversity.

Nominate Outstanding CPH Staff for UI Staff Awards
The UI Staff Council is accepting nominations for its annual awards.
Three categories of awards are available: University of Iowa
Outstanding Staff Award, Board of Regents Staff Excellence Award, and
the David J. Skorton Award for Staff Excellence in Service to the UI.
Any member of the University -- faculty, staff, or student -- may make
nominations.

Careers for Change Lecture Focused on Climate Change
As part of the UI’s Earth Week, Carrie La Seur, energy and
environmental lawyer and adjunct assistant professor of occupational
and environmental health, will present two lectures: "Careers for
Change: Careers in Environmental Law & Social Justice" on April 21
from 4-5 p.m. in 1124 University Capitol Centre, and "Public Lecture
on Climate Change" April 21 at 7 p.m. in 1117 University Capitol
Centre.

Wellmark’s Community-Based Grants Featured at Council Meeting
Matt McGarvey, director of The Wellmark Foundation, presented the CPH
Research Council with information about the foundation’s funding
priorities focused on childhood obesity prevention and community-based
wellness and prevention. Despite current financial constraints, McGarvey
said Wellmark continues its support of community-based projects. The
foundation is particularly interested in proposals that impact the
community and are sustainable beyond the funding period. The
foundation’s Growing Up LEAN grant program’s letter of interest
deadline is April 21, and its Healthy Communities grant program’s
letter of interest in due Sept. 3.

Invisible Children National Tour Visits UI April 17
Invisible Children is an organization that focuses on ending the
23-year civil war in Uganda, which has left millions displaced and in
refugee camps that are saturated with violence. Representatives
from the Invisible Children national office will be at the UI campus
on April 17 to inform students about the current issues in Uganda.

Engelmann Earns IOWA Award for Improving WorkplaceAMY ENGELMANN, CPH graduate program coordinator, will be recognized
for making a positive difference in the workplace with an Improving
Our Workplace Award (IOWA) at a reception to be held May 20.
This year, the IOWA Committee encouraged nominations of staff who made
incredible efforts during the flood challenges. Engelmann helped
ensure the 23 international students participating in a CPH summer program
were successful despite the rising flood waters that displaced them from their
initial, temporary residence at the UI.
