UI Recognizes Students, Faculty, Staff, Alumni at Finkbine Dinner
The University of Iowa honored outstanding students, faculty, staff,
and alumni April 14 at the 92nd anniversary Finkbine Dinner for
representative student leaders, one of the university's most
prestigious award ceremonies. FLORIN OPRESCU, who will complete his
doctorate in community and behavioral health this year, was honored
with a Hancher-Finkbine Graduate/Professional Student Medallion.

Grant Wood Osher Class Offered on April 23
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, at the UI Center on Aging, is
offering a class on one of Iowa's greatest artists, Grant Wood, the
last summer of his life -- spent in the small Iowa resort town of
Clear Lake in 1941 -- and the paintings he finished there.

UI Has Highest Number of "Power Down for the Planet" Pledges
The University of Iowa gathered 6,013 pledges for the "Power Down for
the Planet" challenge, the most by any university participating in the
program and a third of the pledges made by all participating
universities nationally.

U.S. News Ranks Graduate Programs, Colleges
U.S. News & World Report released its rankings for graduate programs
and colleges nationwide. The College of Public Health continues its
No. 11 rank among other public universities and its No. 18 rank among
all public and private schools of public health.

NIH Funds UI Blood Pressure Study for $8.5 million
Only about half the people with high blood pressure who see a doctor
keep their pressure under control. To study whether
physician-pharmacist collaboration can improve control rates,
particularly among minorities, the UI College of Pharmacy and College
of Public Health have received a total of $8.5 million through two
grants from the National Institutes of Health.

Merchant: Don't Dismiss Value of Preventive Care
(Des Moines Register, 4/18/2009)
In response to an editorial that questioned the the cost-effectiveness
of prevention, JAMES MERCHANT, professor of occupational and
environmental health, authored an op-ed that defended the value of
prevention in the context of health care reform. Investing in public
health infrastructure and prevention policies and programs to improve
quality and health outcomes, while better controlling costs, should
provide the foundation for health care reform, he said.

Osher Institute Helps People Remain Intellectually Active
(Iowa City Press-Citizen, 4/20/2009)
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute provides educational programs
for citizens aged 50 and older. Staying intellectually active adds to
the quality of life as people age, said Kathleen Buckwalter,
co-director for the UI Center on Aging. Osher is based in the Center
of Aging, which is part of the Carver College of Medicine and the
College of Public Health.

Study Focused on Air in Flood-Damaged Homes
(The Gazette, Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, 4/22/2009)
Health effects posed by flood air-quality issues are the subject of a
research study. PETER THORNE, director of the Environmental Health
Sciences Research Center, said the study measures mold, bacteria,
asbestos, endotoxins — molecules that can be released from bacteria —
and other sources of irritation to lungs or asthma or allergies.
Earlier this month, KIMBERLY HOPPE, CPH graduate research assistant,
took 32 air samples in a home in Palo. The tests sampled levels of mold
and bacteria and will be compared with levels in other homes.

Group Hopes to Build Honduran Health Clinic
(The Daily Iowan, 4/24/2009)
Imagine a three-hour trip to the nearest health clinic, only to find
the center has run out of medicine. For some in Las Mangas, Honduras,
that scenario is a reality. A group of UI engineers, which includes
Leda Lozier, and her husband, MATT LOZIER, a Ph.D. student in public
health, want to build a clinic for the community. On April 26, the
group will hold a silent auction to raise funds.

Nominations Invited for Faculty Achievement Award
Nominations are now being accepted for the CPH Board of Advisors 2009
Award for Faculty Achievement in Community Engagement. The award
acknowledges outstanding accomplishments by a faculty member in
leadership for community service. The deadline for submissions is
May 18.

CPH Honors Ceremony to Be Held May 15
The college will hold its annual Graduation Reception and Honors Ceremony
on May 15 at the University Athletic Club to recognize the achievements of students, faculty, and staff members. The Milford E. Barnes awards are presented to one student
from each of the college's five departments and the Master of Public
Health program. Milford E. Barnes served as professor and head
of the Department of Hygiene and Preventive Medicine from 1930-1952.

RiverFest Moves Downtown
RiverFest, an annual event featuring a full lineup of bands,
comedians, dance performances, games, and more, has moved downtown.
Events begin tonight at 5 p.m. on the Pedestrian Mall in front of the
Sheraton Hotel and resume on Saturday, April 25 at 11 a.m.

Student-Visitors Receive Environmental Health Education
The Iowa Superfund Basic Research Center and the Environmental Health
Sciences Research Center hosted about 80 eighth graders from Columbus
Junction this week to offer them a "hands-on" education in
environmental health research.

Junior Faculty Eligible for American Cancer Society Seed Grants
Funds for seed grants to permit the initiation of promising new
projects by junior faculty members and independent investigators are
available annually from the American Cancer Society. Submissions are
due to the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center Research Review Committee
by noon on May 11.

CPH Students Carry Water for a Cause
On April 23, students gathered on the UI campus to participate in Be
Hope To Her, a national event in which students are advocates for
those living without access to clean water in the developing world.
During the event, women stepped into the experience of women in Africa
by walking around campus with a bucket of water on their heads. Other
participants served as educators for passersby as the students
carrying buckets caught the attention of many on campus.
