CPH Experts Respond to Influenza H1N1 Concerns

The spread of influenza A (H1N1) virus captured many news headlines this
week. GREG GRAY, professor of epidemiology and director of the
Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases, TARA SMITH, assistant professor
of epidemiology, and CHRIS ATCHISON, director of the University Hygienic
Laboratory and associate dean for public health practice, weighed
in on the situation in numerous media reports as posted on the
CPH Influenza A (H1N1) Resources.

Green Goals: Video Features UI Sustainability InitiativesIowa Magazine, a program on the Big Ten Network, features
sustainability efforts at the UI. In the segment, DAVID OSTERBERG,
professor of occupational and environmental health, comments on the
immediacy of the sustainability situation, and the CPH academic building's
LEED certification is also featured.

Nominations for 2010 Hansen Award Invited
The Richard and Barbara Hansen Leadership Award and Distinguished
Lectureship is the College of Public Health’s principal means for
recognizing and honoring persons in the health field who have
demonstrated outstanding leadership. Nominations for the 2010 Hansen
Award are now being accepted. Selection criteria and nomination
forms are now available online. Nominations must be postmarked
no later than July 31, 2009.

Quinlisk to Address H1N1 in Grand Rounds Presentation Next Week
Patricia Quinlisk, state epidemiologist and medical director for the
Iowa Department of Public Health, will present "Emerging Issue: Novel
Influenza A (H1N1)" on May 6 at noon as part of the Upper Midwest
Center for Public Health Preparedness's Grand Round series.
Quinlisk's presentation from Des Moines will be broadcast in two
locations on the UI campus, Room 538 Pharmacy Building and Room A117
Oakdale Hall.

The deadline for nominating staff for the 2009 UI Outstanding Staff
Award, the 2009 Board of Regents Staff Excellence Award, and the 2009

Students Present at Interdisciplinary Research Poster Session
The annual poster session sponsored by the Interdisciplinary Health
Group Student Poster Committee took place April 23. The event is
designed to give students an opportunity to present health-related
research and interact with researchers from other health disciplines.
Presenters SOYANG KWON, epidemiology Ph.D. candidate, and AMANDA
IRISH, an undergraduate mentored by GREG GRAY, professor of
epidemiology, were student award winners.

Individuals ages 18-25 and 65 and over are invited to participate in a
research study involving medication management and human computer
interaction tasks.

Fulbright Student Scholarship Information Sessions Next MonthThe Fulbright Student Program is designed to give master's and doctoral
candidates, recent baccalaureate recipients, and young professionals
the opportunity for personal development and international experience.
Information sessions will be held May 5 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. and May
12 from 2:30-3:30 p.m., in the International Commons, 1117 University

management and policy doctoral students who best exemplify the mission
of the HMP Ph.D. program in terms of excellence or promise of

Student Mentored by CPH Expert Wins Research Award
Joanna Kao, a senior at Iowa City West High School who was
mentored by JEFFREY DAWSON, associate professor of biostatistics,
and UI colleagues, earned recognition and a $20,000 scholarship for
her project "Possible Roles of Bilirubin and Breastfeeding in Protection
of Premature Infants against Retinopathy of Prematurity" at the Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition held April 17-20 in Washington, D.C.

Student Honored for Research Poster on Staph, State Fair Swine
PHIL SCHEIBEL was honored with the Outstanding Poster Presentation
Award in the Social Sciences at the American Society for
Microbiology’s General Meeting, held May 17-21 in Philadelphia, Pa.
Scheibel, a UI senior working with TARA SMITH, assistant professor of
epidemiology, presented “Prevalence, Antibiotic Resistance, and
Molecular Characterization of Staphylococcus aureus in State Fair
Swine.”

In the April 24, 2009, issue of the CPH News Digest, a
reference to U.S. News and World Report’s rankings of schools of
public health should have stated that the current rankings are carried
over from 2007, not new rankings. USN&WR plans to survey public health
programs in fall 2010 and publish new rankings in 2011.
