State Epidemiologist Discusses Influenza A (H1N1)
Patricia Quinlisk, state epidemiologist and medical director for the
Iowa Department of Public Health, discussed the recent outbreak of
influenza A (H1N1) May 6 as part of the Upper Midwest Center for
Public Health Preparedness's Grand Rounds series.

UI Research Teams Awarded Pilot Grants
Eight University of Iowa research teams, including several from the 
College of Public Health, have been awarded a total of $212,600
in pilot grants by the UI Environmental Health Sciences Research Center.

Abstracts Being Accepted for Agricultural Safety and Health Forum
Abstracts are now being accepted for research, education, and outreach
presentations at the Midwest Rural and Agricultural Safety and Health
Forum, to be held Nov. 18-19 at the Stoney Creek Inn in Johnston,
Iowa. The deadline for abstracts is July 1.

Influenza A (H1N1) virus continues to be a news item this week as new
cases are confirmend and misinformation is clarified. This week, GREG
GRAY, professor of epidemiology, TARA SMITH, assistant professor of
epidemiology, and PETER THORNE, professor of occupational and
environmental health, weighed in on H1N1 in numerous media reports.

Value in Healthcare Forum to Be Held May 28
To increase awareness of the critical role health care plays in the
nation’s economy, the College of Public Health has partnered with
the Concord Coalition to organize a series of public forums. The next
forum, titled "Value in Healthcare and the Lessons Learned in Iowa,"
will be May 28 at the Renaissance Savery Hotel in Des Moines. It will
focus on the provision of high-value, high-quality health care in Iowa
and will feature health policy experts from Washington, D.C., who will
provide current information on federal health reform efforts.

Leaders Wanted for Great Plains Public Health Leadership Institute
Emerging and established public health leaders who would benefit from
a year-long leadership training program are encouraged to apply for
the Great Plains Public Health Leadership Institute. Nationally
recognized, the institute is providing tuition stipends for Iowa,
South Dakota, and Nebraska scholars. Deadline is June 1.

Rape Victim Advocacy Program Volunteers Needed
The Rape Victim Advocacy Program (RVAP) advocate training program
begins on June 1. RVAP advocates provide support, information, and
referral over the phone, as well as respond to calls for supporting a
survivor at the hospital or with law enforcement. Contact Katryn

interested in applying.

Hardin Library Extends Hours for Finals Preparation
The Hardin Library will have extended hours on May 8 and May 9 to
accommodate students studying for final exams. The hours on those days
are as follows: Friday, May 8, 7:30 a.m.-midnight; Saturday,
May 9, 10:00 a.m.-midnight.

Get Geared Up for Bike to Work Week, May 10-16
Leave the car at home, next week is Bike to Work Week. Several local
bike-friendly events are scheduled, including a minor maintenance and
bicycle tune-up opportunity for CPH students, faculty, and staff on
May 11 on the plaza outside the CPH administration offices in General
Hospital. Bring your bike between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
