Study: Veterinarians at High Risk for Infections from Animals
The recent H1N1 influenza epidemic has raised many questions about how
animal viruses move to human populations. While there is no evidence
that veterinarians played a direct role in the current H1N1 epidemic,
a new report by University of Iowa College of Public Health
researchers shows that veterinarians are at markedly increased risk of
infection with zoonotic pathogens, the viruses and bacteria that can
infect both animals and humans.

UI College of Public Health Honors Two Outstanding Alumni
The College of Public Health has selected James Cerhan, Ph.D., M.D.,
and Vickie Shavers, Ph.D., to receive 2009 Outstanding Alumni Awards.
The awards will be presented at the college's annual honors ceremony
May 15.

Third Annual Osher Winery Tour Series Begins May 26
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the UI is offering its third
series of Iowa winery tours, "Wines of Iowa III," on Tuesdays from May
26 through June 30.

Fuortes Filed Compensation Petition
(Amarillo Globe News, 5/11/2009)
At a public meeting in Amarillo, Texas, federal health officials will
discuss a law that provides compensation for workers sickened
by exposure to radiation or toxic material. Three years ago, Sarah Ray
of Amarillo and LAURENCE FUORTES, UI professor of occupational and
environmental health, filed a petition with the federal government,
seeking the special status for some workers at the city's Pantex
Plant.

CPH Staffers Train "Ad Decoders" at Girls Go Global Event
To help young women develop into savvy media consumers, EMMA GELMAN
and NATOSHIA ASKELSON, both with the CPH Center for Health
Communication and Social Marketing, presented a session on advertising
and media at the May 9 Girls Go Global event, which was planned with
the help of Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa & Western Illinois. An
estimated 1,500 people attended the event, which was designed
to empower girls in grades K-12.

Grand Rounds Video Now Available Online
Patricia Quinlisk, state epidemiologist and medical director for the
Iowa Department of Public Health, discussed Novel Influenza A
(H1N1) during her May 6 Grand Rounds presentation, which
is now available as an archived webcast online. Free registration is
required to view the video.

CPH Research Council Meetings to Reconvene in AugustThe May 21 CPH Research Council meeting has been canceled due to other
commitments of many of the council members. The council does not meet
during the summer months, but it will begin again next school year with the
2009-2010 Distinguished Faculty Lecture on Aug. 25, 3:30 p.m. in 2117
MERF.

Fall Orientation for International Students to Be Aug. 11-14
Orientation for new international students in graduate and
professional programs will be Aug. 11-14. Because the Office of
International Students & Scholars expects a significant increase in
enrollment, organizers suggest academic departments that wish to
schedule events for graduate students during these days check with
Julie Pollock at 335-0335 to avoid conflict with orientation
programming. New students must attend certain orientation sessions
before they are released for registration.

Pharm.D./M.P.H. Student Featured in Graduation StoryAt the UI College of Pharmacy commencement ceremony, JACK KAMPF,
Pharm.D./M.P.H graduate, challenged his fellow graduates to become
"irreplaceable" as they enter the workforce, the Iowa City Press-Citizen reported. Kampf was the pharmacy class president and a 2008 M.P.H. graduate.
