Survey Reveals Health Effects of 2008 Floods on UI Students
In summer 2008, researchers from the University of Iowa Injury
Prevention Research Center distributed a university-wide survey to
better understand students' flood experiences and the impact on
health. The results show that a majority of UI students were affected
in some way by the floods.

One year after the historic flood of 2008, University of Iowa
researchers are conducting several research projects -- including one
led by PETER THORNE, professor of occupational and environmental
health -- to learn more about flood-related effects.

Increased Household Endotoxin Associated with Poverty, People, Pets
People with asthma often pay close attention to potential allergens
lurking outdoors, but CPH research shows they also may
want to be wary of dust indoors that can contain endotoxin, a potent
inflammatory agent that is a component of many types of bacteria.

Iowa's Center for Agricultural Safety and Health invites the public to
participate in a rural roadway safety meeting to be held from 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m. July 23, at the Iowa Department of Public Safety, 215 East
7th St., in Des Moines, Iowa.

Cognitive Training Reduces Older Adults' Health Care Costs
Older adults' predicted annual medical care expenditures can be
reduced significantly through the use of cognitive training, according
to a research team led by FREDRIC WOLINSKY, Ph.D., who holds the John
W. Colloton Chair in Health Management and Policy.

Disease Spreads in Rural Communities Too
(Discovery News, 6/15/2009)
During a disease epidemic, officials tend to focus on urban areas,
where people are packed into close, viral-spreading quarters, but
rural areas deserve attention too. "Classically, people retreated to
rural areas during epidemics," said GREGORY GRAY, professor of
epidemiology and director of the Center for Emerging Infectious
Diseases. "Today, we think that rural areas, particularly those
closely associated with large populations of animals, might be at
increased risk of infections."

Former Army Ammunition Plant Workers United at Luncheon
(Burlington Hawk Eye, 6/25/2009)
In addition to screening patients, the employees of the Burlington
Atomic Energy Commission Plant-Former Worker Program tackled the
difficult task of feeding former workers at an annual luncheon.
LAURENCE FUORTES, project director, said the event allows former
workers a chance to reconnect and discuss concerns with the Energy
Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act.

Program Works With Ex-Army Ammunition Workers

81-year-old Leonard W. Duke is not keen on doctor's visits, but the
former army ammunition worker does trust LAURENCE FUORTES,
professor of occupational and environmental health, and his staff at
the Burlington Atomic Energy Commission Plant-Former Worker Program.
Employees who did the secretive work have been linked to an assortment
of maladies. The program aims to identify materials the workers were
exposed to and the dangers they posed.

Chrischilles Comments on Medication Studies in Elderly

ELIZABETH CHRISCHILLES, professor of epidemiology and director of the
Center for Education and Research on Therapeutics, says there needs to
be an increased research focus on the effects of medications in elderly
patients, especially since many research trials involve subjects who
are under age 65.

Guest Column Revisits Smoking Ban Anniversary
(Iowa City Press-Citizen, 6/30/2009)
The state recently marked the first anniversary of the Smokefree Air
Act. EILEEN FISHER, CPH associate research scientist and president
of Clean Air for Everyone Johnson County, co-authored a guest column
noting the legislation's outcomes. The state has seen smoking rates
decrease at an unprecedented rate to the present level of only 14
percent -- the second lowest in the nation -- and calls to the Iowa
Quitline from people wanting to quit have gone up fourfold since the
legislation was introduced.

Op-Ed: Grilling's OK, But Don't Get Burnt
(Iowa City Press-Citizen, 7/1/2009)
Summer barbecuing is a national pastime. Concerns, however, about
possible health risks associated with grilled meats may lead some
people to question their choice of outdoor activities. DONNA
HOLLINGER, a registered dietitian with the Nutrition Center in the
College of Public Health, offers safe grilling tips to lessen the
effects of meat-grilling compounds that may increase cancer risk.

College Launches Public Phase of Fund-Raising Campaign
The College of Public Health held a campaign kickoff celebration on
June 18 marking the public launch of the "Building Today for a Healthy
Tomorrow" fund-raising campaign. Dean SUE CURRY welcomed an audience
of friends and supporters to the event.

Hardin Library Seeks Feedback for Proposed Journal Cuts
Due to changes in Hardin Library’s collection development funding,
the library has compiled a proposed list of journals to be canceled
for 2010. The Excel list can be sorted by title, cost, index, etc. Any
request to keep a journal should be sent by July 24 to Linda Walton at
linda-walton@uiowa.edu while copying Dean Curry.

July Seminars Focus on Emergency Response
Emergency preparedness is the theme for Grand Round sessions hosted by
the College's Upper Midwest Center for Public Health Preparedness this
month. Two sessions were held this week. The topics for the two
remaining sessions will "Be Personally Prepared for Emergencies: What
Can You Do?" on July 15 and "Severe Weather -- Hospital/Public Health
Lesson Learned, Cedar Rapids Flooding of 2008" on July 30.

Volunteers Wanted for Iowa City Book Festival
The Iowa City Book Festival, set for July 18 at Gibson Square on the
University of Iowa campus, will depend on the efforts of volunteers to be a
success. People are needed to serve as assistants for program
sessions, information booth, vendors, children's tent, opening/closing,
or as a general assistant. To learn more about volunteer opportunities

Wellmark Announces Call for Healthy Communities Grants
The Wellmark Foundation is now accepting Letters of Interest from
organizations interested in improving the health status of Iowa and
South Dakota through its Healthy Communities Grant Program, focused on
community-based wellness and prevention projects. Letters are due by
Sept. 3, 2009.

CPH Students Awarded Grants for International Research
Six College of Public Health students are among 28 UI graduate
students to receive Stanley Graduate Awards for International
Research. The $2,000 awards made by UI International Programs are
offered to graduate students who undertake projects requiring research
abroad. The awards are made possible by the Stanley-UI Foundation
Support Organization and are the UI's premier awards for international
study.

IT Update

HawkID Dropped Public-Health Domain on July 8
In a University effort to consolidate services and reduce support
costs, all PUBLIC-HEALTH domain accounts were transferred to the IOWA
domain on July 8. Everyone is now expected to logon using the same
username and password but with the IOWA domain selected rather than
the PUBLIC-HEALTH domain. This initiative is meant to reduce confusion
for faculty, staff, and students transitioning from one college or
department to another within the University. If you have questions,
direct them to cph-support@uiowa.edu.

Rummage in the Ramp is an annual city-sponsored effort that aims
to keep tons of reusable items out of the landfill and get it to
