Updated Fact Book Profiles Health of Iowans
The University of Iowa College of Public Health, in partnership with
the Iowa Department of Public Health, has released the 2009 Iowa
Health Fact Book, a broad-ranging report covering the health and
health-related behaviors of Iowans.

University of Iowa Leadership Awards ARRA Grants
University of Iowa leaders announced their plans for awarding $14
million in federal stimulus funds to support projects that will help
create a stronger university. The funds include an award that will
bolster educational opportunities for Iowans in their home communities
through strengthened College of Public Health distance-learning
capabilities.

UI Study Finds Increase in Unintentional Poisonings in Iowa
Unintentional poisoning is a growing problem in Iowa, and deaths from
it are climbing, according to a University of Iowa report. The study,
led by JAMES TORNER, UI professor of epidemiology, found the number of
unintentional poisoning deaths in Iowa rose from 67 in 2002 to 160 in
2008.

UI Professor to Discuss Animal-Human Diseases Aug. 25
GREGORY GRAY, University of Iowa professor of epidemiology, will
present the 2009-10 College of Public Health Distinguished Faculty
Lecture, "Zoonotic Infections: Their Importance and Neglect," at 3:30
p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, in Room 2117 of the Medical Education and
Research Facility.

Lecture and Symposium Sept. 18 to Focus on Medical Home Concept
Stephen Shortell, Ph.D., dean and professor in the School of Public
Health at University of California, Berkeley, will discuss "The
Patient-Centered Medical Home: Its Role in Health Care Reform" at 9
a.m. Friday, Sept. 18 at the Coralville Marriott Hotel and Conference
Center.

Expert to Speak on Preventing Infection Aug. 27
Didier Pittet, M.D., professor of medicine and director of the
Infection Control Department at the University of Geneva Hospitals in
Geneva, Switzerland, will deliver the 2009 Hsu-Li Distinguished
Lectureship in International Epidemiology at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug.
27, in Room E331 General Hospital (Medical Alumni Auditorium). He will
speak on "Preventing Infection: Scaling-Up from Local to Global."

Peters Attending Addictions Conference
(Missourinet, 8/13/2009)
The 2009 Midwest Conference on Problem Gambling and Substance Abuse is
underway in St. Louis, bringing together more than 200 addiction
experts, treatment providers, and representatives of the gambling
industry. Experts taking part in this event come from the five-state
region of Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. CANDACE
PETERS, director of training at the University of Iowa's Prairieland
Addiction Technology Transfer Center and a member of the Midwest
Consortium on Problem Gambling and Substance Abuse, says there is
quite a bit of ground to cover during this three-day gathering.

Rautiainen Comments on Irish Farm Safety
(Irish Times, 8/14/2009)
RISTO RAUTIAINEN, clinical assistant professor of occupational and
environmental health, said Ireland is well served by new, stricter
farm-safety legislation. He said stress was considered to be a factor
in 12 percent of all farm accidents, and there were fewer fatal
injuries on large commercial farms because they tended to have more
modern machinery.

Report Documents Rise in Unintentional Poisonings
(The Dubuque Telegraph Herald, 8/15/2009)
A UI report, led by JAMES TORNER, professor of epidemiology, documents
the growing threat of unintentional poisonings. Health officials lay
the blame on interactions between prescription drugs or the mix of
prescription drugs with alcohol -- noting the increase mirrors a rise
in the prescriptions of muscle relaxants and sedatives.

Helping Former Munitions Workers After Decades of Illness
(The Burlington Hawk Eye, 8/17/2009)
After researching, a former worker at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant
discovered her struggle with illnesses may be linked to her time at
the plant. LAURENCE FUORTES, project director of the Burlington Atomic
Energy Commission-Former Worker Program, invited her and other workers
to participate in a beryllium test. BILL FIELD leads the cohort
mortality study that tracks adverse health outcomes that were reported
to be linked to potential exposure.

CPH Panel to Lead Discussion Following Film Screening
As part of the college's 10th anniversary celebration, a panel of
college experts will lead a discussion following the screening of
"Garbage Dreams," a documentary shown during Iowa City's Landlocked
Film Festival. The screening is free and open to the public at 7 p.m.,
Aug. 27, at the Englert Theatre. Panel to follow.

Great Plains Center Earns Agricultural Health Award
The Great Plains Center for Agricultural Health was recognized for its
significant contributions to the improvement of agricultural
behavioral health with the “Bringing Hope and Health to Rural
Agricultural Community” award. On behalf of the center, MURRAY MADSEN,
associate director, accepted the award on Aug. 4 at the Sowing the
Seeds of Hope conference in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Dean Curry Confers with ISU College of Vet Medicine
College of Public Health Dean SUE CURRY traveled to Ames this week to
meet with Dean John Thomson and other faculty of the Iowa State
University College of Veterinary Medicine to review successful
collaborations that are extending public health training to
veterinary professionals in Iowa, the U.S., and the world. The College
of Public Health teams with ISU’s College of Veterinary Medicine to
offer a dual Doctor of Veterinary Medicine/Master of Public Health
degree. Another program, offered mostly via distance learning, allows
practicing veterinarians to earn an M.P.H. degree. Students attend two
intensive, two-week sessions at each university during summers, but
the majority of courses are offered online.

College of Public Health Staff Council Accepting Nominations
Nominations are now being accepted for the upcoming College of Public
Health Staff Council election. All non-organized Professional and
Scientific and Merit Exempt personnel holding a regular appointment of
50 percent or more with the College of Public Health are eligible. The
deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. Sept. 3.

President Mason to Visit College on Sept. 1
UI President Sally Mason will visit the College of Public Health on
Tuesday, Sept. 1. All College of Public Health faculty, staff, and
students are invited to attend an open forum with Mason at 11 a.m. in
Room 2117 MERF. In addition to the forum, Mason will tour parts of the
college and participate in several small group sessions with faculty,
staff, and students from across the college’s academic departments and
research centers.

Personal Health Assessment
Faculty and staff are encouraged to take the online Personal Health
Assessment (PHA) to receive valuable feedback on areas like stress
management, exercise, and nutrition, as well as access to free Online
Lifestyle Management Programs on similar topics. Additionally,
participants will receive $50 on their next paycheck – or $65 if they
took the PHA in previous years. Access your PHA at the Self-Service

This summer, six students participated in the Department of
Biostatistics' Biostatistics Summer Initiative (BSI). The program
provides biostatistical training and applied research opportunities
for underrepresented minority undergraduate students with math or

The College of Public Health is pleased to host an informal luncheon
for students of color in the health sciences from noon to 1:30 p.m. in
the MERF atrium on Aug. 28. The purpose of the luncheon is to

Volunteers Needed for Vaccine Clinics
Johnson County Public Health needs volunteers who can administer
vaccine in the fall H1N1 vaccine clinics. Volunteers need to be
licensed or able to administer vaccines under the supervision of a
faculty member. The clinics will start when the vaccine arrives during
mid-October or later. Please register to volunteer at the Iowa
Statewide Emergency Registry for Volunteers (I-SERV) web site. Johnson
County Public Health will call volunteers when they are needed with
specific information on clinic dates, times, and locations.

Film Screening "Garbage Dreams"
As part of the College's 10th Anniversary celebration, a panel of
CPH experts will lead a discussion following the screening of
"Garbage Dreams," the opening film for Iowa City's Landlocked
Film Festival. "Garbage Dreams" is 2009 documentary about the
world's largest garbage village on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt.
Long before modern "green" initiatives, this community of
Zaballeen, Arabic for "garbage people," survived by recycling 80
percent of the garbage they collect.
