Editorial Wishes College a Happy 10th Anniversary

The college plans to celebrate its 10th anniversary year with a number
of events, including the film screening and CPHled panel discussion
about the documentary "Garbage Dreams," which took place Aug. 27 at
the Englert Theatre. In an editorial, editors complimented the
college's efforts to educate the public about public health and wished
the college a happy 10th anniversary.

Film Festival Director Promotes CPH Involvement in Screening

While promoting the Landlocked Film Festival, Mary Blackwood, the
festival's creative director, mentioned a "really cool new thing" this
year following the screening of the documentary "Garbage Dreams,"
College of Public Health faculty led a Q&A about public health issues.

Gray Discusses Zoonotic Diseases
A rising number zoonotic infections - viruses transmitted between
animals and humans - has prompted increased research efforts at the
UI. GREG GRAY, professor of epidemiology, highlighted studies of
zoonotic infections during the CPH's annual Distinguished Faculty
Lecture. Gray, who joined the UI in 2001, has spearheaded the
creation an infectiousdisease epidemiology program and the
college's Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases, which he directs.

CPH Panel Led Community Discussion Following Film Screening
As part of the UI College of Public Health's 10th anniversary
celebration, a panel of college experts led a community discussion
following the film screening of "Garbage Dreams" on Aug. 27 at the
historic Englert Theatre. The panel included SUE CURRY, dean; TARA
SMITH, assistant professor of epidemiology; PETER THORNE, professor of
occupational and environmental health; and MAGGIE CHORAZY, doctoral
student in epidemiology.

College of Public Health Goes to the State Fair
The college set up an artificial putting green at the Iowa State Fair
in Des Moines on Aug. 22, in a playful attempt to engage and inform
fairgoers about the many ways that public health enhances everyday
life. The activity is also one of the ways the college is marking its 10th
anniversary year.

University Encourages Flu Prevention Recommendations
This fall semester, University officials expect to see cases of the
H1N1 flu virus appear on campus. As the situation develops, the campus
community will be regularly updated. In the meantime, the University
released a list of recommendations and absence resources in an effort
to curtail the spread of H1N1.

Distinguished Faculty Lecture Focused on Zoonotic Infections
The college kicked off the academic year with the annual Distinguished
Faculty Lecture. GREG GRAY, professor of epidemiology, presented
"Zoonotic Infections: Their Importance and Neglect" on Aug. 25
highlighting various zoonotic disease research projects within the
college and the UI Center for Emerging Infectious Disease, which
Gray directs.

WHO Leader Presented HsuLi Lecture on Preventing Infection
Didier Pittet, professor of medicine and director of the Infection
Control Department at the University of Geneva Hospitals in Geneva,
Switzerland, delivered the 2009 HsuLi Distinguished Lecture in
International Epidemiology on Aug. 27 . Pittet's lecture, "Preventing
Infection: Scaling Up from Local to Global," described his experiences
working on several initiatives to decrease health careassociated
infections through improved hand hygiene practices.

National Health Care Reform Advocacy Training Sept. 2
The Partnership for Better Health in cooperation with the Iowa Public
Health Association is hosting an advocacy training program for
volunteers to learn how Iowans can actively shape national health
reform. The training will be from 121:30 p.m. on Sept. 2 at the
Washington County Conservation Education Center. The event is free,
but registration is required. Contact Jeneane Moody at

Iowa Child, Youth Injury Prevention Conference Sept. 15
The 8th Annual Iowa Child and Youth Injury Prevention Conference will
be Sept. 15 at the Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines. This
conference offers six continuing health education credits.

A couple of CPH students documented their work this past summer
through blogs. LAURA VONNAHME, M.P.H. student in epidemiology,
completed an internship for the Tuberculosis Bureau within The New
York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and wrote about
her work in Haiti through her CPH student blog. JUSTIN BRUECK, M.H.A.
in Health Management and Policy, also shared information about his
internship experiences at Kameda Medical Center in Kamogawa,
Japan in a blog he shares with his wife.

IT Update
First Annual Health Sciences Technology Fair to be Sept. 25The Health Science Technology Fair will be Sept. 25 from 11 a.m. to 2
p.m. in the MERF Atrium. This interdisciplinary technology fair,
sponsored by the College of Medicine Student Government, is open
to all on the health sciences campus. It will address technological
issues with participants such as Dell, Apple, HCIS Help Desk, ITS, and
Hardin Library, among others.

Health and Safety Bulletin, September 2009The September 2009 issue of the Health and Safety Bulletin, includes
information on influenza prevention, revised walking surface
standards, new TB tests, and more.
