Osher Institute Offers Group Guitar Lessons Beginning Sept. 15
Learn basic guitar technique, including first position and barre
chords, strumming, folk finger picking and melody line playing, during
the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute's "Group Guitar Workshop: Folk
and Classical Styles."

UI Researchers Collaborate on Study of Back Pain in Older Adults
University of Iowa researchers will collaborate on a three-year, $1.3
million study examining the co-management of older adults with low
back pain by medical doctors and doctors of chiropractic. Funded by
the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, the study will
be led by researchers from the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research
in Davenport, Iowa.

New Building, Anniversary Featured in UI Foundation's Newsletter

Although the UI’s first new college in five decades has been unified
in its mission since it was founded, it has yet to come together under
one roof. This year, the College of Public Health is anticipating the
best gift: the promise of a building of its own. As the college marks
its 10th anniversary, it has also publicly launched a campaign to
raise private funds for the facility.

Nutrition Center Encourages Celebrating Whole Grains Month

include food in this transition, as you jump start the school year and
eat for optimal performance. September is Whole Grains Month and an
opportunity to incorporate new choices into new routines, said LOIS A.

Radio Novela Program Will Educate About Unintended Pregnancy

A two-month, Spanish-language radio novela sponsored by the College of
Public Health is the first endeavor of its kind at the UI. The novela,
which is geared toward 18- to 30-year-olds in Iowa, tries to educate
people on women’s reproductive issues and family planning, said SHELLY
CAMPO, associate professor of community and behavioral health.

UI President Mason Visits the College of Public HealthSince being named the 20th President of The University of Iowa in
2007, one of Sally Mason’s top priorities has been visiting and
listening to the University’s many constituencies. The College of
Public Health was pleased to welcome President Mason, Mark Braun, her
chief of staff, and Jonathan Carlson, her senior associate, on Sept. 1.

Shortell to Present the 2009 Hansen Lecture
Stephen M. Shortell, dean of the University of California-Berkeley
School of Public Health, has been named the 2009 recipient of the
Richard and Barbara Hansen Leadership Award and Distinguished
Lectureship. Shortell will present the Hansen Lecture at 9 a.m. on
Sept. 18 at the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Coralville, as
part of the Patient-Centered Medical Home Symposium. The
lecture is free and open to the public. He will also present a CPH
student seminar at 3 p.m. on Sept. 17 at Seebohm Conference Room
(283 EMRB).

Faculty, Students Encouraged to Register for Medical Home Symposium
The Symposium on Patient-Centered Medical Home will be held Sept. 18
at the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Coralville. It is
designed to bring together the Iowa health community to learn about,
and discuss strategies to achieve, patient-centered medical homes.
This one-day symposium is a collaborative effort of the College of
Public Health and the UI Public Policy Center.

Faculty Lecture “Zoonotic Infections: Their Importance and Neglect” on
Aug. 25 highlighting various zoonotic disease research projects within
the college.

College Hosts Diversity Luncheon for Health Sciences StudentsThe College of Public Health hosted a luncheon for students of color
in the health sciences on Aug. 28. An estimated 130 students, faculty,
administrators, and representatives from University cultural
organizations gathered to enjoy lunch and socialize at the inaugural
event.

Public Health Courses in India Offered Over Winterim
Two public health courses taught in South India will be offered over
winter break (Dec. 27 through mid-January). DAVID OSTERBERG, professor
of occupational and environmental health, will be teaching
“Environmental Planning & Public Health in Tamil Nadu,” and ANNE
WALLIS, assistant professor of epidemiology, will lead “Maternal and
Child Health in South India.”

UI Study Abroad Fair on Sept. 15
Students who want to learn more about studying abroad are encouraged
to attend the UI Study Abroad Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 15.
Students who have studied abroad, as well as study abroad advisors and
peer advisors, program directors, and financial aid advisors, will be
available to answer questions.

"Food, Inc." reveals how the nation's food supply is increasingly
dominated by a very limited number of corporations that emphasize
profits over consumer health. The film serves serves as a call to
arms for consumers to more carefully wield the power of their
food-spending dollars. The Sept. 11 show will be followed by a
