Take Up the Community Service ChallengeIn honor of the newly established Sept. 11 National Day of Service and
the College of Public Health’s 10th Anniversary, faculty, students,
and staff are invited to take part in the CPH Community Service
Challenge. As our college marks its first decade, this is the time to
take part in a community service project — or better yet, several
projects — that will help improve the health of people locally and
around the world.

offering "Belly Dancing for Fun and Fitness" from 7 to 8 p.m.

Goldsmith Receives 2009 I-CASH Hall of Fame Award
Iowa's Center for Agricultural Safety and Health (I-CASH), based in
the UI College of Public Health, has named Jan Goldsmith of Des
Moines, Iowa, the 2009 recipient of its Agricultural Safety and Health
Hall of Fame Award.

Osher Institute Class on Directing Choreography Begins Sept. 19
The Osher Institute at the University of Iowa is offering "Fantasies,
Fights and Faeries," a class on specialty staging for the theater,
from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturdays, Sept. 19 to Oct. 10, in room
5159 Westlawn, on the health science campus.

College of Public Health students, faculty, and staff and their
families had a chance to socialize and enjoy a picnic Sept. 9 at City
Park. The annual event helps kick off the new school year and
celebrate the end of summer.

International Conversation Partners Wanted
Registration is now open for the campus-wide international
conversation partner program. Campus Conversation Partners is devoted
to building lasting relationships between non-native English speakers
and faculty/staff. Partners can share their cultures and traditions
for only an hour a week of informal conversation.

Energy, Climate Change Symposium Oct. 16-17
“Energy and Climate Change in the Midwest: Creating Opportunities in
the New Economy” will take place Oct. 16-17, 2009, at the University
of Iowa Athletic Club. This symposium presents an opportunity to look
to the future of energy in the Midwest in light of the causes and
effects of global climate change and the potential benefits of a green
economy.

The UI Office of the Provost has announced its calendar of events for
the DEO/Academic Administrator Workshop Series, including a DEO
Overview of the Year, on Sept. 14, Time Management: Balancing Time and
Task as a DEO/Administrator, on Oct. 15, and a DEO Budget Workshop, on
Nov. 3.

Research Council Meeting to Focus on Conflict of InterestThe first CPH Research Council meeting for the year will be Sept. 17,
8:30-9:30 a.m. in 2189 MERF. Charlotte Talman, director of the UI
Conflict of Interest in Research Office, will cover the information
that researchers need to know about conflict of interest in research,
including what constitutes "significant financial interest" under UI
policy and federal regulation, when and what to disclose, how to
disclose, and what to expect after disclosure.

questions during an open forum on Sept. 10. The first students to
arrive won several special prizes, including CPH 10th anniversary
visors.

The College of Public Health Student Association held its first
meeting of the academic year. Officers introduced themselves and
encouraged students to be involved in the association and its events
throughout the year.

LGBT Welcome Dinner to Be Sept. 16
All students are invited to the Sept. 16 Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, &
Transgender Students and Allies Welcome Dinner at the LGBT Resource
Center, 125 Grand Avenue Court from 4-6 p.m. The event is sponsored by
the College of Medicine Office of Cultural Affairs and Diversity

Global Health Club Offers Opportunity to Raise Awareness
Help address local, national, and international global health concerns
through a network of students, faculty, staff, and community members

Make a Pledge on 9/11 National Day of ServiceThe newly established Sept. 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance
honors the victims of 9/11 and those who rose to service in response
to the attacks by encouraging all Americans and others throughout the
world to pledge to voluntarily perform at least one good deed, or
another service activity on 9/11 each year.

This symposium is a collaborative effort of the University of
Iowa's Public Policy Center Forkenbrock Series and the College of
Public Health's Hansen Award Lecture. It has been designed to

discuss strategies to achieve, patient-centered medical homes.
The one-day symposium will include background and national
perspectives, as well as examples of current practice. Special
attention will be focused on redesign, reimbursement and
incentives in Iowa.
