Farm Safety Week a Reminder to Take Precautions on Rural RoadsHarvest season is here, and busier rural roads and grim outcomes are
likely if precautions are not taken. Due to concerns about collisions
and near collisions between farm equipment and motor vehicles, the
2009 National Farm Safety and Health Week, Sept. 20-26, launches a
year-long focus on the theme "Rural Roadway Safety: Alert, Aware and
Alive."

Stephen Shortell Named 2009 Hansen Award Recipient
The University of Iowa College of Public Health has named nationally
recognized health care scholar Stephen M. Shortell, Ph.D., as
the 2009 recipient of the Richard and Barbara Hansen Leadership Award
and Distinguished Lectureship.

Osher Institute Egyptian Dance Class Begins Sept. 22
"Egyptian Dance: Evolution of an Art Form," offered by the Osher
Institute at The University of Iowa, will be held from 6 to 7 p.m.
Tuesdays, Sept. 22 through Oct. 13, in Room 2189 of the Medical
Education and Research Facility Building on the UI campus.

Cancer Patients Benefit from Restaurant Opening Sept. 17
Opening night for a new Iowa City restaurant benefited cancer
patients through support for the Iowa Healthcare Project, a
collaborative effort by three University of Iowa organizations:
Hancher Auditorium, the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the
College of Public Health.

UI School of Social Work's Latino Conference in Des Moines Oct. 9
The impact of immigration raids, history of Latinos in Iowa, cultural
competence, civic engagement, public health issues, education, and
Latino businesses will be topics covered at the Strengthening and
Valuing Latino Communities in Iowa Conference Oct. 9 at Grand View
University in Des Moines. The daylong conference is themed "Hecho En
Iowa/Made In Iowa," and the College of Public Health is a co-sponsor.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at The University of Iowa is

Muscatine Revamps Snack Menu to Offer Healthier Choices

Public Health Game Spurs Interest in Field

A new game created at The University of Iowa aims to spur interest in
the public health field as the number of employees in the workforce
dwindle in the next decade. “Did You See That?: Pathways to a Career
in the Public Health Laboratory” is a DVD-based game intended for
middle school, high school, and college students. The Hygienic Lab
created the game with the College of Public Health.

Weaving Hope, Health, Music, and Fine Dining
(The Daily Iowan, 9/17/2009)
When Robert and Rebecca Bluestone, of Santa Fe, N.M., found out
Rebecca was diagnosed with cancer, they were terrified. The artists
used their crafts -- music and weaving -- to find solace during her cancer
treatments. Hancher Auditorium, the College of Public Health, and the
Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center hosted a fundraiser for the Iowa
Health Care Program at the Orchard Green Restaurant on Sept. 17. The
project aims to bring the Bluestones to seven cities across the state to
promote artistic health care to cancer centers.

Shortell Delivers Hansen Lecture, Student SeminarStephen M. Shortell, dean of the University of California-Berkeley
School of Public Health and the 2009 recipient of the Richard and
Barbara Hansen Leadership Award, presented the Hansen Distinguished
Lecture on Sept. 18 at the Marriott Hotel in Coralville, as part of
the Patient-Centered Medical Home Symposium. He also visited campus
and presented a CPH student seminar on Sept. 17.

Mark Your Calendar: CPH Homecoming Tailgate Oct. 10
All faculty, staff, students, and alumni are invited to the College of
Public Health’s Homecoming Tailgate from 4 – 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct.
10 as part of the college's 10th anniversary celebration. Hot dogs and
soft drinks will be served on the patio outside the college’s
administrative offices in General Hospital. More details to come.

Faculty Meeting and Open Forum Oct. 2
Following the CPH Faculty Meeting on Oct. 2, there will be an open
forum with the dean at 3:45 p.m. for all CPH faculty, staff, and
students followed by a social at 4:30 p.m. Both events will be held in
the Bean Conference Room (SE301 GH).
University to Offer Seasonal Flu Vaccinations
The University Employee Health Clinic and UI Wellness will
again offer free seasonal flu vaccinations to UI regular full-time and
part-time (50 percent or greater) faculty and staff. Any employee
working less than 50 percent time has the option of receiving the
vaccine for a fee of $10.

faculty members, teaching assistants, and other instructors.

Pedestrian Traffic, Bus Stop to Change Near Westlawn, MERF
Construction for the new Iowa Institute for Biomedical Discovery
begins on Sept. 21. Access to and from Westlawn and other points
directly east will be closed during the four-plus years of construction.
Pedestrians must travel north around or through Medical Education
Research Facility (MERF) and the Carver Biomedical Research Building
(CBRB), or route through the Bowen Science Building (BSB). In
addition, the bus stop between BSB and CBRB on Newton Road will be
closed. An alternate bus stop will be located between MERF and the
Medical Education Building, west of the crosswalk between the Newton
Road parking ramp and MERF.

Diversity Dialogue Circle to Begin Sept. 21
The UI Women's Resource and Action Center (WRAC) is offering a fall
Diversity Dialogue Circle, or series of discussion groups, to men and
women in the University and surrounding communities to raise
participants' awareness of issues related to diversity and dynamics of
power and privilege in American society. The fall circle will begin at
6 p.m. Sept. 21, at WRAC, 130 N. Madison St. in Iowa City. The
participants will meet for eight consecutive weeks through Nov. 9.

"Investigator" Means PI … and a Fair Number of Others as WellWhen university-based researchers and private sector business
interests intersect, situations may arise which could compromise – or
have the appearance of compromising – research integrity. Charlotte
Talman, director of the UI Conflict of Interest in Research Office,
met with the College of Public Health Research Council on Sept. 17
to explain current federal regulations and University policies and
procedures concerning disclosure and management of actual
or apparent conflicts of interests related to sponsored programs.

Attention Junior Faculty: Seed Grants Available
Funds for seed grants to permit the initiation of promising new
projects by junior faculty members and independent investigators are
available annually from the American Cancer Society through The
Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. Applications are welcome from
investigators who wish to pursue projects broadly related to the
biological, clinical, psychosocial, behavioral, or social problems
associated with cancer research. The deadline is Sept. 23.

Sept. 23-25
This two and one-half day workshop is designed to familiarize
participants with all facets of occupational hearing conservation
and certify them as audiometric technicians. Upon successful
