Field Contributes to WHO's Global Initiative on Radon
University of Iowa professor R. William Field, Ph.D., is part of an
international team of scientists who contributed to a new World Health
Organization (WHO) publication that calls on countries to either
strengthen or establish programs to control the presence of radon in
homes and other residential settings.

Mathematical Field of Dreams Conference at UI Set for Sept. 25-27
In the mathematical sciences field, it's hard enough attracting
talented students into graduate school. But drawing underrepresented
students into mathematics or biostatistics doctoral programs is almost
as hard as proving the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality.

Ida Beam Professors to Present Emmy-winning Documentary Oct. 1
The public is invited to a free screening of the award-winning
documentary "A Walk to Beautiful" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, at the
Englert Theater, 221 East Washington St. in Iowa City. The screening
will be followed by a discussion with the film's producers.
Additionally, the producers will participate in a related seminar led
by Anne Wallis, Ph.D., assistant professor of epidemiology, on Oct. 2.

Osher Institute Creative Writing Workshop Begins Sept. 29
An advanced creative writing workshop will be offered by the Osher
Institute at the University of Iowa from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept.
29 through Nov. 17, in room 5159 of the Westlawn Building.

Patience Urged on Rural Roads
(St. Joseph New-Press, in St. Joseph, Missouri, 9/23/2009)
The National Safety Council, as part of National Farm Safety and
Health Week, advises drivers to be aware of increased farm equipment
traffic on rural roads as harvest season approaches. According to the
Great Plains Center for Agricultural Health, based in the College of
Public Health, more than 1,100 accidents occur annually between farm
equipment and motor vehicles in the center's nine-state region.

Briefs

Fall Marks Season of Progress at CPH Building Site
Steady progress continues to be made on the CPH Academic Building.
During the month of September, the contractor has been pushing to
complete the steel framework for the south half of the new building.
Enclosure sufficient to support indoor work over the winter is the
primary goal. Also on the agenda this fall: subcontractors are at work
at the lower level installing masonry walls, metal wall studs, piping
and electrical systems, and HVAC ductwork. Exterior site work
scheduled for this fall includes tree plantings and grass seeding for
the hillside off the south end of Ferson Avenue, as well as
construction of a new stairway leading up to the building site from
North Riverside Drive. Check out the latest progress on the live

CPH Walkers Invited for UI Homecoming Parade
As part of the College of Public Health's 10th anniversary
celebration, students, faculty, and staff are invited to walk in the
UI Homecoming Parade on Friday, Oct. 9. It's not too late to be part
of the CPH contingent! Participants will get an anniversary t-shirt
and are invited to a social at Dean Curry's home following the parade.
Space is limited. Please RSVP by Sept. 28.

Hancher Finkbine Alumni Medallion Nominations Wanted
The Finkbine Dinner Committee invites nominations of UI alumni to
receive one of the prestigious Hancher-Finkbine Medallions at the
Finkbine Dinner to be held April 13, 2010. Recipients are chosen for the
manner in which they exemplify the characteristics of learning,
leadership, and loyalty. In keeping with the tradition alternating
between female and male recipients each year, a male will be
chosen this year.

Task Force on Internationalization, Diversity Forum Sept. 28
Everyone working and learning on the west campus is encouraged to
attend an open forum and provide input on how the UI leadership can
apply resources strategically and make progress toward a more diverse,
inclusive, and international University. The task force will gather
input on Sept. 28, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Medical Alumni
Auditorium, E331 General Hospital.

The University has launched a new version of the UI Master Calendar of
Events. It's a snap to check out activities, and it's also easier to
increase campus awareness about activities your department may be
planning by submitting it to the UI Master Calendar.

Research News

CHEEC Seed Grant Proposals Due Nov. 2
The application deadline is Nov. 2 for seed grants from the UI Center
for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination (CHEEC). Funding
emphasis is on original pilot studies that would lead to innovative
lines of environmental health research. Up to $120,000 total is
available for research projects, with maximum individual awards of
$30,000.

Applications Sought for Harvey Prize
The Harvey Prize, a prestigious prize awarded by the Technion-Israel
Institute of Technology every year, rewards excellence by recognizing
outstanding breakthroughs in science, technology, and human health.
Technion will be awarding one prize in the field of Science and
Technology and one prize in the field of Human Health. Nominations are
due Nov. 1.

A group of medical students has started an infectious disease interest
group this fall. The group plans to establish interdisciplinary
student leadership and create a mentoring program and student-run

The Innovations in Teaching with Technology Awards program raises the
level of teaching and learning by supporting significant and
innovative instructional technology projects that have the potential
to improve student success and retention. For more information, attend

HR Update

Working at IOWA Survey Results Available
College of Public Health faculty and staff report the college offers
a positive work culture, according to the 2008 Working at IOWA survey.
Approximately 75 percent of staff and 80 percent of faculty responded
to the survey. The survey data also suggest some areas where further
improvements may be made. CPH survey results have been summarized and
posted on the collegiate web site.

Nominations Accepted for CPH Flexible Pay Awards
Nominations are now being accepted for the Flexible Pay Awards. The
awards are aimed at recognizing exceptional performance among
non-organized professional and scientific staff. Nominations for the
Exceptional Performance Award and SPOT Performance Award must be
initiated by a supervisor and are due on Dec. 18. For more information
