Schnoor to Head UI Water Sustainability Steering Committee
University of Iowa Provost Wallace D. Loh has appointed engineering
professor Jerry Schnoor as director of the UI Water Sustainability
Cluster Steering Committee. In June, Loh announced that a
University-wide competitive award process had resulted in a winning
proposal to create a faculty alliance on "water sustainability" in
CLAS, Public Health, Law, Engineering, the Graduate College, and the
Public Policy Center.

Iowa's Center for Agricultural Health and Safety and the Great Plains
Center for Agricultural Health, both based in the University of Iowa
College of Public Health, will host the Midwest Rural and Agricultural
Safety and Health Forum Nov. 18-19 at the Stoney Creek Inn in
Johnston, Iowa.

UI Nets 103 of 113 NIH Grants to Iowa Under Federal Stimulus Funding
The National Institutes of Health has awarded 113 grants funded by the
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to Iowa institutions,
103 of the grants to researchers at The University of Iowa. Several of
the grants were awarded to investigators in the College of Public
Health.

Reminder: CPH Open Forum and Social Today
All CPH faculty, staff, and students are invited to an open forum
today at 3:45 p.m. in the Bean Conference Room (SE301 GH). The agenda
includes an update on the state of the college, 10th anniversary
activities, Working at Iowa survey results, the CPH strategic planning
initiative, and open discussion. A social will follow at 4:30 p.m.

Show Your Public Health Spirit During Homecoming
To celebrate the College of Public Health's 10th anniversary, the
college is taking part in the UI homecoming parade on Friday, Oct. 9.
(Hint: the CPH entry will have 4 wheels and 60 legs.) On game day, the
college will host a tailgate for CPH students, faculty, staff, and
alumni.

Hansen Lecture Video Available for Viewing Online
This year's Hansen Distinguished Lecture was presented by Stephen
Shortell, dean of the School of Public Health at UC-Berkeley and Blue
Cross of California Distinguished Professor of Health Policy and
Management. Shortell's lecture was presented Sept. 18 as part of the
Patient-Centered Medical Home Symposium, a collaborative effort of the
College of Public Health’s Hansen Award Lecture and the UI Public
Policy Center's Forkenbrock Series. The lecture is available for
viewing in various formats.

Conference Connects Minority Students to Graduate Opportunities
An estimated 90 underrepresented minority students from around the
United States and 40 of their faculty mentors gathered on the
University of Iowa campus Sept. 25-27 to attend two events
highlighting graduate and career opportunities in the
mathematical sciences. The Third Annual Iowa Mathematical Field of
Dreams Conference, held this year in conjunction with the American
Statistical Association's StatFest Conference, enabled students to
meet with representatives from graduate programs across the country,
talk with current graduate students, and explore career opportunities,
including careers in public health.

Health and Safety Bulletin, October 2009
The October 2009 issue of the Health and Safety Bulletin includes

Upcoming Conferences and Meetings

Committee to Release Health Care Reform Report Oct. 12
The Iowa Committee for Value in Healthcare is holding a public
conference Oct. 12 in Des Moines to present its final report on the
principles for value-based health care reform and the "Iowa
Experience" that supports those principles. A panel of experts on
health reform will include Michael Millenson, president of Health
Quality Advisors, LLC. Millenson is a former Chicago Tribune writer
who focused on health reform and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

Conference to Address Aging and Mental Health Oct. 19-20
"A Time for Transition: Policy, Practice and Research in Aging &
Mental Health" will take place Oct. 19-20 in Des Moines. The
conference will highlight Pre-Admission Screening and Resident Review
(PASSR) in residential facilities; collaborative models of
evidence-based psychiatric practice in health care settings; and
contemporary approaches in serving older persons with mental health
needs. The conference is sponsored in part by the Iowa Coalition on
Mental Health and Aging.

"The Role of Executive Leadership in Quality Improvement" is the
theme for this year's Annual Iowa Healthcare Executive Symposium. The
symposium takes place at the Sheraton Iowa City Hotel on Oct. 30, and
features prominent speakers, including Richard Pollack, executive vice
president of the American Hospital Association.
