Parkinson's Disease May Increase Crash Risk in Low VisibilityA study by researchers at the University of Iowa and the Iowa City
Veterans Affairs Medical Center suggests that drivers with mild to
moderate Parkinson's disease may be at higher risk of crashes compared
to healthy older drivers in low visibility conditions such as fog.

Adventures in Painting Series Begins Oct. 7
A course on making hand-painted stationery will be held from 6:30 to 8
p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, in Room 5159 of the Westlawn Building. The
course is being offered by the Osher Institute at the University of Iowa as part of a four-week series called "Adventures in Painting."

The Osher Institute at the University of Iowa is offering a course on

Peek-Asa Comments on Workplace Violence
(Reuters, 10/5/2009)
The murder of a graduate student at Yale University is a case of
workplace violence, authorities say, that has pushed the issue of
danger at work into the spotlight. Workplace violence is "undercounted
in general and not all that simple," said CORINNE PEEK-ASA, professor
of occupational and environmental health at the University of Iowa.
One factor is the definition. Some experts limit it to physical
violence or workdays lost, while others extend it to verbal abuse,
stalking, bullying, and threats. "What we don't have a good sense of is
how often there is threatening behavior or harassing behavior," said
Peek-Asa.

Program Works to Reduce Iowa’s Unintended Pregnancies

Informed hair stylists and a funny-looking stork mascot may be the key
to educating women on unintended pregnancies and contraceptives. The
Iowa Initiative, which aims to reduce the rate of unintended
pregnancies in Iowa and the nation, is employing those unique tactics
in its new research program. CPH faculty researchers SHELLY CAMPO and
MARY AQUILINO are both involved in projects that are part of
initiative.

UI Experts Train North Carolina farmers

Experts from the University of Iowa, including KELLEY DONHAM,
professor of occupational and environmental health in the UI College
of Public Health, are helping teach farm safety to agricultural
workers in North Carolina.

Conference Explores the Latino Experience
(The Daily Iowan, 10/9/2009)
Today, at the 11th annual “Strengthening and Valuing Latino Families
and Communities in Iowa Conference: Hecho en Iowa,” Onofre Aguilar and
eight other former migrant employees of Agriprocessors will tell their
personal accounts in the play La Historia de Nuestras Vidas. The event
will also host various public forums on Latino issues including
immigration rights, status of Latino health, arts and culture,
education, and business. The UI College of Public Health is a
co-sponsor of the conference.

Reminder: Homecoming Parade and Tailgate PartyDon't miss the College of Public Health's debut entry in the UI
homecoming parade! The parade starts downtown this evening at 5:45
p.m. On Saturday, the college will host a tailgate party from 4-6 p.m.
on the patio area directly outside the college's administrative
offices in General Hospital. Hot dogs, cookies, coffee, and hot
chocolate will be provided.

The current draft of the College of Public Health's strategic planning
initiative for FY 2011-2016 is now available for review online.
Comments are welcome and can be submitted until Oct. 12. A HawkID
login is required to view the draft.

Applications for Instructional Improvement Awards Due Nov. 6
The Council on Teaching is now accepting applications for
Instructional Improvement Awards. These awards provide funding (up to
$5,000) to support instructional initiatives that will make
exceptional and specific contributions to learning. Anyone directly
involved with student instruction is encouraged to apply for funding.

Lectures to Address Global Hunger and Its Solutions
The Careers for Change series, sponsored by the UI Center for Human
Rights, welcomes to campus next week two speakers involved with the
fight against world hunger. On Oct. 13, Gebisa Ejeta, winner of the
the 2009 World Food Prize, will speak, followed by Roger Thurow,
journalist and co-author of "Enough: Why the World's Poorest Starve in
an Age of Plenty," on Oct. 14.

Close Up: Construction and Landscaping at New Building Site
On Oct. 1, UI Facilities Management led a group of CPH personnel,
including Dean Sue Curry, on a tour of the site where the College’s
new academic building is under construction. The visit provided a
close-up view of the work taking place on the first level of the north
and south wings of the new building, as well as the steel framework
rising on the south wing. Also this week, landscaping crews were busy
near the site planting trees on the hillside at the south end of
Ferson Avenue.

Research Professionals Network Seeks MembersThe UI Institute for Clinical and Translational Science is developing
the University-wide Research Professionals Network, a professional
networking system for staff members involved in the conduct of human
subjects research. The overall goal of the network is to serve as a
forum for research-related topics and as a resource for training
opportunities to create a more vibrant human research environment at
the UI.

Student Contributes to Award-Winning ProjectMaster of Public Health student Karen Summers completed a practicum in
spring 2009 with the Healthy Living Coalition, a division of the
Healthy Linn Care Network based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Summers helped
to develop the inaugural Linn County Board of Health Healthy Worksite
Award, which was chosen to receive a Healthy Iowa Community Award from
the Wellness Council of Iowa, in partnership with the Governor’s
Council on Physical Fitness and Nutrition and the Academy for a
Healthy Iowa. The award was presented Oct. 1 in West Des Moines.

SharePoint Services to Be Discontinued Oct. 14The SharePoint service used for online collaboration will be removed
from available services within the University IT Services on Oct. 14.
The new replacement, GroupShare service, is in place and ready to be
used for new online collaborations.

working in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, as an Allan
Rosenfield Global Health Fellow in Program Management. Her focus is on
U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) programs.
Anjuli is blogging about her experiences, in her words, to “give those
of you interested in international or global public health insight
into what it's like to live and work abroad in a post (or not quite so
post) conflict country.”

National Public Health Observance
October Is Health Literacy MonthHealth Literacy Month is a time for organizations and individuals
worldwide to promote the importance of understandable health
information. The theme for 2009 is "Why Health Literacy Matters:
Sharing Our Stories in Words, Pictures, and Sound." The site includes
a story written by Jay Cooper, CPH graduate and current staff member,
about a dyslexic man who learned to read later in life.
