$2.2 Million Grant Supports UI Women's Reproductive Health Research
The University of Iowa Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has
been awarded a five-year, $2.2 million grant from the National
Institutes of Health (NIH) to support junior faculty researchers in
women's reproductive health. Investigators in the College of Public
Health will serve as mentors.

Osher Institute Offers Free Life Transitions Forum Oct. 23
The Osher Institute at the University of Iowa is hosting "Life
Transitions and Personal Pathways for Change" from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday,
Oct. 23, in Room 1289 of the Carver Biomedical Research Building on
the UI campus. This event is free and open to the public.

President Obama Names Field to Advisory Board on Worker Health
President Barack Obama announced Oct. 14 that he will appoint R.
William Field, professor of occupational and environmental health and
epidemiology in the University of Iowa College of Public Health, to
the Advisory Board on Radiation and Worker Health.

Older Adults Choosing to Stay in Iowa City in Retirement
(Des Moines Register, 10/12/2009)
The number of people who are retiring and staying in the Iowa City
area or coming to the area to retire is increasing, said BRIAN KASKIE,
associate professor and director of public policy for the UI Center on
Aging. Groups like the Johnson County Livable Community for
Successful Aging Initiative, which Kaskie is involved with, are trying to
cultivate the niche and make recommendations for how to make the
area more accommodating for older adults through core services.

Exercise Proves Essential in Optimal Health

Though fitness often becomes a major concern in adulthood, when aging
and the onset of chronic disease makes exercise imperative, there's
increasing evidence that physical activity in childhood has
significant long-term implications for health. KATHLEEN JANZ, a
professor of epidemiology and health and sport studies, found that
children who lead less active lives are more likely to be overweight
years later.

CPH Shows Spirit at Homecoming Parade, Tailgate
In honor of the college's 10th anniversary year, faculty, staff, and
students and their families expressed their support for the Hawkeyes
-- and the college -- during UI Homecoming last week. Nearly 30 people
participated in the College of Public Heath's entry in the homecoming
parade, and on game day, a number of college supporters sipped on
hot cocoa at the CPH tailgate.

Domestic Violence Intervention Program Cell Phone Drive
In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Epidemiology Staff
Council and the Epidemiology Student Association are sponsoring a cell
phone drive. Donations of old/used cell phones and chargers and other
miscellaneous items will be accepted until Oct. 30 to benefit the
Domestic Violence Intervention Program of Iowa City.

The annual "Way Up: Women in Higher Education" conference will be held
Nov. 5-6 at the West Des Moines Marriott Conference Center. The

Speaker to Address Open Access to Research Journals
Did you know the price to some scholarly journals has increased by
2.5 times the Consumer Price Index in the last 25 years? That is a
price that UI Libraries cannot afford, but it is a tool that
researchers can’t afford to work without. Molly Kleinman, special
assistant to the dean of libraries at the University of Michigan, will
deliver: “Open Access: How I learned to stop worrying and love the
Internet” at 12 p.m. on Oct. 20 in the Bijou at the Iowa Memorial
Union as part of Open Access Week.

Fellowships Available for Obermann Graduate Institute
The Obermann Center for Advanced Studies is accepting applications
for the January 2010 Obermann Graduate Institute on Engagement and the
Academy. This week-long seminar includes a $500 fellowship for the
participants. Participants discuss theories of engagement and meet
with experts, including graduate colleagues, faculty members, and
potential community partners.

Student Recognized as UIHC Volunteer of the Year
HEIDI QUEZNER, an M.H.A. student, has been named the UIHC Volunteer of
the Year -- out of 1,270 active volunteers. The award is an
"opportunity to recognize and publicly acknowledge the invaluable work
done by outstanding Iowa hospital volunteers. It showcases active
volunteers who have shown dedication and initiative in their work and
have positively contributed to Iowa hospitals." Quezner was one of 21
total volunteers from across the state who were recognized at the IHA
annual meeting on Oct. 6.

UI Influenza Information
The University of Iowa has created an influenza information web site
for students, faculty, staff, and parents. The site includes absence
forms, vaccination clinic schedules, and related flu news. One item of
note is that the seasonal flu vaccination program for non-UI Health
Care faculty and staff is currently postponed due to a temporary delay
in vaccine shipments.
