Health Care Symposium on Leadership, Quality Is Oct. 30
The 31st annual Iowa Healthcare Executive Symposium will take place
Friday, Oct. 30, at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Iowa City.
Pre-registration is encouraged; however, participants also can
register the morning of the event, which starts at 8:30 a.m.

National Day of Remembrance Honors Former Nuclear Weapons Workers
In honor of the newly designated Cold War Patriots National Day of
Remembrance, which is Friday, Oct. 30, the Former Worker Medical
Screening Program will hold two open houses in the days preceding the
day of remembrance. The program, which is funded by the U.S.
Department of Energy and based at the University of Iowa College of
Public Health, is hosting the events to publicly recognize and
commemorate former nuclear weapons workers.

UI College of Public Health Assists in H1N1 Find
(New York Times (multiple entries), 10/17/2009)
Of 103 pigs tested in late August, three pigs at the Minnesota
State Fair tested positive for H1N1, the flu virus that is causing the
current pandemic, the USDA reported. The pigs are the first in this
country found to harbor the virus. All the pigs appeared healthy.
They probably caught the virus from infected people, said researchers
at the University of Minnesota, who conducted the testing along with
researchers from the University of Iowa College of Public Health.

UI Researchers Help Confirm H1N1 in Pigs

The USDA, with the help of UI researchers, confirmed the first cases of
H1N1 influenza in American-raised pigs. This fall, the researchers
collected swab samples from the nostrils of pigs at the Minnesota
State Fair, located just outside St. Paul. “It’s a premier example,”
said GREG GRAY, professor of epidemiology. “We had known that there
had been a number of outbreaks in people associated with swine shows.”

Joint Efforts Can Benefit Hospitals, But Think It Through
(Inside Healthcare, 9/1/2009)
Partnerships among clinician organizations can make a lot of sense
when health care enterprises get together to meet a significant need
in a community, said LAWRENCE PRYBIL, UI professor of health
management and policy. However, simply identifying a need that can be
tackled cooperatively doesn’t ensure success. “Partnership is a great
concept, but it’s a concept that’s very complicated,” Prybil said.

Project Hopes to Reduce Pregnancies

Researchers hope that a 15-minute radio program will help answer
women's questions and reduce the number of unintended pregnancies in
Iowa. SHELLY CAMPO, associate professor of community and behavioral
health, is the co-principal investigator of two radio programs, one in
Spanish and one targeting black women. The radio programs are part of
a larger project, the Iowa Initiative to Reduce Unintended Pregnancies.

Live From Iowa: Latina Empowerment

A new radio drama aims to empower Latina women about sexual health.
The program, called “La Noche Te De Sorpresas,” or “The Night Gives You
Surprises,” is broadcast in Spanish and is one of two culturally-specific radio
shows being launched by the UI College of Public Health and the Iowa
Initiative to Reduce Unintended Pregnancies.

Reconnect at the CPH Alumni, Friends Reception at APHACPH alumni and friends planning to attend the APHA Annual Meeting in
Philadelphia, or those who will be in the area, are invited to catch
up with fellow alumni and faculty, staff, and students at a reception
hosted by the college. The reception will be from 6:30-8:00 p.m.,
Nov. 9 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, Room 109B.
Registration Open for "Off to a Good Start" Conference
"Off to a Good Start: Framing Policy for Early Childhood Health
Systems Integration" will be Nov. 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the
Science Center in Des Moines. The conference brings together
participants who wish to integrate Iowa’s health system for early
childhood by identifying and prioritizing key policy recommendations.

Call for Catalyst Award Seed Grant Proposals
The Catalyst Award Seed Grant targets creative projects that enhance
and encourage the diversity goals of The Iowa Promise, the UI’s
five-year strategic plan. Grants of up to $1,000 are available to UI
faculty, staff, and students as seed money for start-up or short-term
projects. Applications are due by 5 p.m., Dec. 1.

Mark Your Calendar: Human Rights Film Series
The UI Center for Human Rights will mark its 10th anniversary with a
film series Nov. 3-6. The center will host four films: Milk; Voices
From Inside: Israelis Speak; Garbage Dreams; and Pray the Devil Back
to Hell.

Bike Ride to Raise Awareness on Climate Change Oct. 24
A 3.5-mile bike ride through downtown Iowa City on Oct. 24 will be
part of an international campaign to raise awareness on climate
change. The event is for 350.org, an organization dedicated to the
creation of a global climate treaty at the Copenhagen Climate Change
Summit in December that lowers carbon dioxide concentration in the
atmosphere below 350 parts per million. The UI bike ride is from 2-4:30
p.m. At 3:30 p.m., participants will be asked to help form "350"
for a symbolic photograph at the Pentacrest.

UI Womens Health Fair Oct. 28
Come find out what UI Women's Health is all about from 11 a.m. to
2 p.m. Oct. 28 at the UI Women's Health Fair. Events include a
discussion on women and cancer at noon, plus giveaways, free
massages, door prizes, and refreshments. The fair will take place
in the Old Capitol Town Center's second-floor UI Conference Center
facility.

MHIRT Program Offers International InternshipsGraduate/professional awards are available to enable minority
students and students from medically-underserved rural or urban areas
to gain international research experience. Students interested in
research pertinent to reducing and/or eliminating health disparities
are encouraged to attend an info session for the Minority Health and
Health Disparities International Research and Training (MHIRT) Program
on Oct. 30, from 2-3 p.m. at the University Capitol Center in room

Join CPHSA and the UI Global Health Club in the Gulu Walk 2009 on
Oct. 24. Registration begins at 11 a.m. on the Ped Mall. The 5k walk
was created to support rebuilding in northern Uganda, a country
disrupted by a 22-year civil war.
