Fuortes: Day Honors Iowa's Nuclear Weapons Workers
(Des Moines Register, 10/24/2009)
In honor of the newly designated Cold War Patriots National Day of
Remembrance on Oct. 30, LAURENCE FUORTES, professor of occupational
and environmental health, called for Iowans to recognize former
nuclear weapons workers who served their country by building and
maintaining nuclear forces. In the process, many workers -- including
those at the Ames Laboratory and the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant near
Burlington -- became ill and some lost their lives from often
unknown exposure to radiation.

Former Worker's Quest for Compensation Denied
(The Burlington Hawkeye, 10/20/2009)
Former Line 1 worker Paul Bell has been fighting in earnest since 2007
to get redress through the Energy Employees Occupational Illnesses
Compensation Program for the conditions he has suffered as a result of
his time as a nuclear worker. Both Bell and staff at the Burlington
Atomic Energy Plant-Former Worker Program, located in the UI College
of Public Health, feel they can do no more than present the evidence
they already have shown several times before.

Gray Advocates Vaccine Priority for Swine Workers
(The Washington Post, 10/25/2009)
The importance of keeping a human pandemic flu strain out of pigs, or
limiting its spread, is underappreciated, according to experts.
They're concerned about the virus getting into pigs and then coming
back to people, questioning what may happen to the genetics during the
time it's in pigs. GREG GRAY, professor of epidemiology, campaigned
in medical journals to have swine workers be made a "priority group"
in any pandemic vaccine program.

cervical cancer rates, underscoring the need for regular screenings.
They pointed out that only two Big Ten schools didn’t cover annual
exams in their student health insurance plans.

UI's Mention of Building Renaming Stirs Up Past
(The Daily Iowan, 10/27/2009)
Before the Board of Regents meeting, the UI announced it would propose
a new name for a UI building but did not release any other details.
This led the DI editorial board to compare the situation to a past
attempt to rename the College of Public Health after Wellmark Blue
Cross and Blue Shield.

Blog: Who’s Investigating H1N1 in CAFOs?
(Grist Magazine, 10/29/2009)
Highlighting a quote from GREG GRAY, director of the Center for
Emerging Infectious Diseases, about respiratory viruses in confinement
facilities and their opportunity to replicate, mutate, reassort, and
recombine into novel strains, a Grist author calls for further
investigation of H1N1 infections or antibodies in confinement hogs.
