WiderNet Grant to Provide Disability Resources in Developing Countries
Officials from the United States Agency for International Development awarded the University of Iowa WiderNet Project a $1.6 million grant to produce and distribute a Global Disability Rights Library for use in developing countries. WiderNet will work with the United States International Council on Disabilities and more than 150 disability rights advocates worldwide to compile best practices and educational resources for the library's collection.

Pleasant surprise: waste sort finds no redeemable beverage containers
Not a single deposit-redeemable beverage container was found during a waste sort coordinated by the University of Iowa College of Public Health and its newly formed student group, the ECO Hawks -- a first for the waste sort projects held on the UI campus.

H1N1 is subject of free talk Nov. 19
"Swine Influenza: What Do We Know About These Viruses and Their Threat to Humans?" is the title of a free, public talk from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, at T-Spoons, corner of Linn and Market streets. Dr. Gregory Gray, director, Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases and professor in the Department of Epidemiology and International Programs in the UI College of Public Health, will speak.

Private rural drinking water well study results released
The newly released Iowa Statewide Rural Water Well Survey Phase 2, which examined the water quality of private rural drinking water wells, shows continuing problems with nitrate and bacterial contamination.

College of Public Health Students Take Up-Close Look at Garbage
Some environmentally conscious students in the University of Iowa College of Public Health will be taking an up-close review of what the college contributes to the landfill. The ECO (Easy Change Overall) Hawks, a public health student group, will perform a baseline audit of a portion of the college of public health's waste stream from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Nov. 12, at the Institute for Rural and Environmental Health.
