McGuire to lead College of Public Health Board of Advisors

Andy McGuire, M.D., chief medical officer of American Enterprise Group, Inc., has been named the new chair of the College of Public Health Board of Advisors.

The Board of Advisors – comprised of leaders from academe, business, community health, government, health care, and labor – meets semi-annually to advise and assist the College of Public Health in areas such as curriculum and degree programs, research programs and priorities, outreach and service, and philanthropy.

"The Board of Advisors offers a critical perspective and expert guidance to our college at a time when public health issues, such as health care reform and the global spread of the H1N1 flu virus, are such important priorities," said College of Public Health Dean Sue Curry. "Andy McGuire will continue the tradition of visionary leadership that has benefited our College throughout its first decade. I am delighted she has agreed to lead this distinguished group of individuals."

McGuire earned bachelor and medical degrees at Creighton University in Omaha, completed a residency at St. Louis University Medical Center, then earned a master of business administration degree at Kennesaw State University, in Atlanta. She held teaching positions in nuclear medicine at Southern Illinois School of Medicine and Washington University School of Medicine before working as a nuclear medicine physician at Mercy Radiology and Veterans Hospital in Des Moines.

From 1998 to 2002, McGuire was vice president of medical resource management and medical director at Wellmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Iowa and South Dakota. She has been chief medical officer for American Enterprise Group since 2002. American Enterprise Group, with business operations in Des Moines and Omaha, specializes in health insurance products for individuals, families, small business owners and affinity groups.

McGuire succeeds Stephen Ummel, director of health industries advisory practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP, who led the CPH Board of Advisors since 2005. Ummel remains on the board and also chairs the College of Public Health’s recently announced "Building Today for a Healthy Tomorrow" campaign.

"We are extremely grateful to Steve Ummel for his outstanding leadership of our Board of Advisors and for his continuing leadership of our capital campaign," said Curry.
