MSN/MPH Combined Degree Program

The University of Iowa, Colleges of Nursing and Public Health

Objective

The PHN Section of the American Public Health Association defines public health nursing as "the practice of promoting and protecting the health of populations using knowledge from nursing, social, and public health sciences." The MSN/MPH degree will prepare students to hold positions such as: director of a public or community health agency, director of occupational health for a company or corporation, case manager for specific populations, or advanced nurse practitioner in a school, occupational or public health organization.

Prerequisites/Admission

The admissions requirements include:

  1. Baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited program;
  2. Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale;
  3. Satisfactory Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores

The applicant must provide:

  1. A formal application;
  2. Complete transcripts for work done in all undergraduate and graduate schools;
  3. Three professional recommendation (U Iowa recommendation forms required)

To be a candidate for this combined degree the applicant must be accepted into the MSN program as a condition of acceptance into the combined degree. This may occur concurrently but the condition of acceptance into the MSN must be made before final acceptance into the MPH program. For information on admission to the MSN program, please see http://www.nursing.uiowa.edu/academic_programs/graduate/msn/index.htm.

The admission committees of the two colleges will independently review the candidate for acceptance into the combined degree. In the College of Nursing this will be the Graduate Admissions Committee and in the College of Public Health. This review will be conducted by the MPH General Track Admissions Committee.
