Aging Study Focus Area (45 s.h.)
Objective
The MPH with an aging studies focus is proposed to take advantage
of two programs at the UI: the Aging Studies Certificate offered
by the Aging Studies Program and the MPH offered by the CPH.
This interdisciplinary program requires approximately two years
of study. Students completing the program will be prepared to apply
competencies in public health practice in the context of the societal
need for new and more effective responses to public health concerns
related to the growth of the elderly population. The student admitted
to this focus area is expected to complete both the degree requirements
for the MPH and the certificate requirements in Aging Studies.
Graduates of the Aging Studies MPH focus area will be able to:
- 1. Understand the demography of aging and its consequences
for the public's health.
- Define the specific public health
issues of greatest concern to the elderly.
- Understand the
specific health service needs and the implications of those
needs on the health care system.
- Develop communication, planning
and analytic skills to function effectively in agencies. providing
public health services
to the elderly.
- Work with elderly individuals and groups
mindful of the special cultural and ethical concerns that may
apply to
them.
