Global Health
Focus Area (43 s.h.)
Objective
Students completing the MPH with a global health emphasis will be prepared to apply competencies in public health practice in a dynamic global health context. To earn the MPH in Global Health, students must complete the degree requirements listed below. Students interested in adding a Global Health Studies certificate should visit the International Programs website: Global Health Studies Program - International Programs - The University of Iowa.
Graduates of the Global Health MPH focus area will be able to:
- Understand how geographical, environmental, cultural, social, political, economic, and ethnic diversity influence health status in human populations.
- Define the most prevalent public health problems in diverse populations, particularly populations in developing countries.
- Develop the cultural competence to work effectively in diverse cultural settings.
- Identify the structure and function of organizations and agencies that influence global health.
- Understand the legal and ethical issues that influence efforts to enhance health on a global basis.
- Appreciate the value of multidisciplinary approaches in addressing global health concerns .
Prerequisite
A Bachelor's degree including a college algebra course, and a college biology course are required.

The following course work is required for all MPH students. Students
must earn ≥ B- (2.67) on each core course and must earn a ≥ B
(3.0) cumulative grade point average on all core courses. When
necessary, a student may repeat courses to achieve this standard.

The MPH Practicum Experience |

The experience from this course, including a final written report and oral presentation or poster session, constitutes the final examination for the MPH program.
Pre-Requisite:
Students should complete all Core Courses prior to registering for the Practicum. In special circumstances, students may request to take a Core Course concurrently with the Practicum.
