Maternal, Child, and Family Health Focus
(42 s.h.)

Objective

The purpose of this MPH is to provide a perspective to major public health issues in maternal, child, and family health. The objectives of this focus area are for students to:

  1. Develop a perspective of major issues in public health as it relates to the focus area of maternal, child, and family health
  2. Develop ability to identify problems in maternal, child, and family health
  3. Develop skills to analyze data in maternal, child, and family health
  4. Develop ability to design experimental protocols to analyze problems and develop solutions of identified problems in maternal, child, and family health.

This focus area has just been approved for student entry in Summer 2003.

Prerequisite

An undergraduate degree is required. The cumulative grade-point-average should be at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Although no specific major is required, students must have taken one semester each of college algebra and biology. In addition, students must provide evidence of background in general human growth and development. This is a prerequisite to the MCFH core courses. Students can meet this requirement by taking the following course or an equivalent.

Practicum Requirement (3 s.h)

170:299 The MPH Practicum Experience [Fall/Spr./Su.] 3 s.h.

Students will work with their faculty advisor and the course director to design a practicum experience that demonstrates the student’s knowledge and skills in maternal, child and family health as well as competency in public health as described by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The experience from this course, including a final written report and oral presentation in an appropriate public forum such as a departmental seminar constitutes the final examination for the MPH.

Pre-Requisite:

Students should complete all Core Courses prior to registering for the Practicum. In special circumstances, students may request to take a Core Course concurrently with the Practicum.
