Questions
I don't live in Iowa City. Is distance learning available?
We offer the core MPH courses via distance education but you must come to Iowa City to earn at least 50% of your course work. Please visit the CPH Distance Education web page for current offerings.
Do I have to be a full-time student?
We accept students for part-time and full-time study.
Is this an accredited program?
The College of Public Health is accredited by CEPH, the Council on Education for Public Health. View the CPH Accreditation Information .
How many students will you accept?
At this time, the number of students admitted to the MPH program is not limited by a predetermined number of spaces.
How long does the program take?
It depends on several factors, including whether you are a full- or part-time student, which MPH area you select, which elective courses you select, and when elective courses are offered. For most students, 2-3 years is adequate to receive a Master of Public Health degree.
What are the deadlines for applying?
A rolling deadline is used for entrance to the fall and spring semesters. Deadlines are:
- Fall semester: May 1 for US citizens, April 1 for international applicants
- Spring semester: November 1 for US citizens, October 1 for international applicants. Please Note: Only combined degree applications are accepted for the spring semester (DVM/MPH, JD/MPH, MD/MPH, MSN/MPH, and PharmD/MPH). All other applications must be for the summer or fall semester.
- Summer session: April 1 for US citizens, March 15 for international applicants, March 1 for the MPH for Practicing Veterinarians.
Apply early to ensure admission decisions can be made in time.
What materials do I need to furnish to apply?
Two sets of official transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended (send one to the UI Office of Admissions and one to Master of Public Health Program), official GRE (or other approved examination) scores, if required official TOEFL ( or for the 2006-06 academic year IELTS scores), 1 or 2 pages identifying the specific area of study within our program describing your interest in that area of study, your related experiences and career goals in public health, a résumé, three reference letters, and a Graduate College application form. Do I really need to take the GRE?
You must submit an official GRE, MCAT, LSAT, DAT, PCAT, GMAT or VCAT examinations score. The USMLE is not accepted in lieu of one of these examinations.
Must I submit TOEFL scores?
TOEFL (or IELTS) scores are not required for international students who have earned a bachelor’s or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university located in a country in which English is an official language. All other non-US citizens (excluding permanent US residents) are required to furnish TOEFL or IELTS scores.
What kind of financial support is available?
The University's Office of Student Financial Aid offers low interest loans and grants to eligible students. In addition, a limited number of tuition awards are granted annually from the Master of Public Health program after the start of the fall semester each year. Students may also seek employment outside the colleges as research or teaching assistants, or as part-time employees. Can I do an internship while I'm a student?
A variety of local internship opportunities exist including those at the Iowa Department of Public Health, the University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratories. Periodically other internship opportunities occur including positions at county health departments. In addition twice each year we advertise opportunities available through the ASPH/CDC/ASTDR Internship Program. Are fellowships available for graduates?
Yes, a variety of fellowship opportunities are possible for graduates through the CDC, including an EID fellowship at the University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory.
Where have your graduates found employment?
Our alumni have found employment in consulting firms, county departments of public health, medical schools and colleges, doctoral program, hospitals, U.S. Air Force, and medical centers.
