UI launches ‘Just Living’ theme semester on social justice

Just living logoJust Living, the University of Iowa’s Spring 2016 Theme Semester on social justice, will explore values, beliefs, and positioning by examining our past and looking to our future. By understanding ourselves, our relationship to others, and the natural world, we can make intentional choices to connect with others. By choosing to be aware of where we come from and where we are, we will engage more with individuals and our larger community.

UI students, faculty, and staff are invited to get involved with the Just Living courses, events, and collaborations.

The College of Public Health has several related events coming up, including:

Jan. 21: Film Screening: Racism, White Denial, and the Cost of Inequality
The film features Tim Wise, a nationally known antiracist essayist, author, and educator.
11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Ellig Classroom, CPHB

Jan 27: Privilege Walk
An interactive exercise and discussion about the effects of societal privilege.
3 to 4 p.m. in Callaghan Auditorium, CPHB

April 26: Film Screening: A Day’s Work
An award-winning documentary film about a young temp worker who was killed on the job. The film explores the troubling issues that led to Day Davis’ death and how the $100 billion temporary staffing industry is putting millions of American workers at risk. Discussion to follow.
7 to 9 p.m. in CPHB
