NSF Mini Workshop series

Researchers (faculty, staff and graduate students) and research administrators are invited to participate in a series of National Science Foundation (NSF) Mini Workshops sponsored by the Iowa Social Science Research Center.

George Malanson, Coleman-Miller Professor in the University of Iowa Department of Geographical and Sustainability Sciences, will conduct the workshops on NSF procedures and practices aimed at improving success rates of submitted proposals. Having recently completed an NSF rotator position in the Division of Environmental Biology, Malanson will share insights regarding NSF procedures and practices from a program officer perspective. This workshop series is designed to engage both researchers and research administrators while providing an in-depth understanding of what program officers and proposal reviewers are evaluating when reviewing proposals.

Malanson has been at the UI since 1985. Last summer he returned from a two-year rotation at the NSF, where he was a program officer in the Division of Environmental Biology and also worked in the Dynamics of Couples Natural and Human Systems inter-directorate program (total of 17 panels). In the past he has served on NSF panels and a four-year term on an National Institutes of Health section. He has participated in 11 NSF-awarded projects, five as lead Principal Investigator.
