Fourth Dean Candidate Interviews on Campus
The fourth candidate for the College of Public Health deanship, JAMES
TORNER, professor and head of epidemiology, met with UI leaders,
faculty, staff, students, and community members this week and shared

Gray: Handwashing Reduces Transmission of Adenovirus
(Reader's Digest, 1/20/2008)
An article about Ad-14, a new strain of adenovirus that has caused
severe illness in three states quotes GREGORY GRAY, professor of
epidemiology and director of the Center for Emerging Infectious
Diseases. “There are no preventive treatments, vaccines, or therapies
specific to this strain,” Gray said. But good hygiene, such as
hand-washing, can reduce transmission.

Reminder: MLK Keynote Address Today
The Department of Biostatistics is co-sponsoring the 2008 Martin
Luther King, Jr., address on Friday, Jan. 25, at 3:00 p.m. in the Old
Capital Senate Chamber. Jacqueline Hughes-Oliver, professor of
statistics at North Carolina State University, will deliver the
lecture, "Building Bridges from the Past to the Present to the
Future."

Interdisciplinary Health Group Meets Jan. 28
ROBERT WALLACE, professor of epidemiology, will be one of the guest
presenters at the next meeting of the UI Interdisciplinary Health
Group. The group will meet on Monday, Jan. 28 from noon to 1 p.m.
Wallace and Christopher Squier, professor of dentistry, will speak on
the subject of tobacco harm reduction.

Great Plains Center Seeks Proposals
The Great Plains Center for Agricultural Health is currently seeking
proposals for its feasibility/pilot project grant program. Total
funding up to $50,000 will be available for new feasibility/pilot
projects this year. Individual project awards will range up to
$20,000. The deadline for application is March 31, 2008.

The UI Institutional Review Board and the Human Subjects Office are
sponsoring the workshop, "How to Complete a New Project Application"
and "Tips and Tricks for Faster Review by the IRB," on Wednesday, Jan.
30. All faculty, staff, and students who are conducting or who plan to
conduct human subject research in the biomedical sciences are welcome
to attend.
