The Heartland Center for Occupational Health and Safety is accepting
research proposals for pilot project funding from doctoral and
post-doctoral trainees, occupational medicine residents, junior
faculty, and faculty new to the field of occupational health and
safety.

Snetselaar Keynotes Local Obesity Summit
(Iowa City Press-Citizen, 1/26/2008)
The Childhood Obesity Summit, held Jan. 25 at the Levitt Center,
brought together community leaders to discuss various approaches to
the growing obesity epidemic. LINDA SNETSELAAR, professor and interim
head of community and behavioral health, gave the keynote address
titled, "Youth Obesity: Potential Avenues for Prevention."

Campo Compares Dieting Strategies in Women's Magazines
(Philadelphia Inquirer, 1/29/2008)
A new study concludes that magazines aimed at African American women
are more likely than "mainstream" women's magazines to encourage fad
diets and reliance on faith rather than proven fat-fighting
strategies. The study was led by SHELLY CAMPO, assistant professor of
community and behavioral health.

An article summarizing the progress of the CPH dean search quotes Dean
JAMES MERCHANT. "I think the college is in excellent shape. I think

Reminder: CPH Students to Present at Poster Session Today
JACKIE LEUNG-HERAS and MARY WHITE, graduate students in community
and behavioral health and 2008 Obermann Fellows, will present posters
at a public poster session on Friday, Feb. 1, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the
Iowa City Public Library, Meeting Room A.

It's Not too Late to Lighten Up, CPH
Governor Chet Culver and Lieutenant Governor Patty Judge have
challenged state employees to take on the Lighten Up Iowa 100-Day
Challenge. The Department of Occupational and Environmental Health has
already formed two teams and would welcome some healthy competition.

Anderson to Speak in CBH Seminar Series
RACHEL ANDERSON, associate professor of health management and policy,
will deliver the lecture, "Policy Intervention Research Via Public
Health Problems," from 11 a.m. to noon in the Seebohm Conference Room
(283 EMRB).

MLK Keynote Address -- Photo Gallery
Photos from the MLK Keynote Lecture on Friday, Jan. 25, are available
for viewing. Jacqueline Hughes-Oliver, professor of statistics at
North Carolina State University, inspired faculty, staff, and students
with stories from her own life growing up in Jamaica and persevering
through her undergraduate and graduate studies in the United States.
Her lecture was co-sponsored by the Department of Biostatistics.
