Study: War Can Lead to Long-term 'Epidemic' of Firearms Injuries to Children
A study led by CORINNE PEEK-ASA, professor of occupational and environmental health, shows that high rates of injury and death may continue for at least five years following a war's end, illustrating the need for firearm prevention programs as part of war reparation efforts.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the UI Center on Aging is
offering "Gandhian Thought: Applications for the 21st Century" from
6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursdays Feb. 28 through April 10.

Deadline for CHEEC Seed Grant Proposals Is March 3
Faculty of public or private colleges or universities in Iowa, as well
as researchers and educators affiliated with state environmental or
health agencies, are encouraged to apply for seed grants from the UI
Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination.

UI Is Not Quitting Quitline Fight

Unanswered questions are still circulating after the UI lost its
contract for Quitline Iowa, the smoking-cessation counseling hotline.
The University is still fighting the decision, currently waiting on a
second appeal to the Iowa Tobacco Commission.

Gray, Smith to Present at Interdisciplinary Health Group Feb. 14
GREGORY GRAY, professor of epidemiology, and TARA SMITH, assistant
professor of epidemiology, will discuss research on emerging
infectious diseases at the next meeting of the UI Interdisciplinary
Health Group. The group will meet on Thursday, Feb. 14 from noon to 1
p.m. at the Public Policy Center Seminar room, 200 South Quadrangle.

Nominations Invited for Faculty Achievement Award
Nominations are now being accepted for the CPH Board of Advisors 2008
Award for Faculty Achievement in Community Engagement. The deadline
for submissions is March 12.

Obermann Fellows Leung-Heras and White Strut Their Stuff
JACKIE LEUNG-HERAS and MARY WHITE, graduate students in community and
behavioral health, presented posters of projects they developed during
the Obermann Institute in January. Leung-Heras presented "Using Photos
to Tell a Story" and White presented the curriculum for a course she
developed called "Global Health Connect."
