Lynch Explains Cancer Etiology
(WQAD-TV, Quad Cities, 2/16/2008)
In a story about cancer clusters, CHARLES LYNCH, professor of
epidemiology and medical director of the Iowa Cancer Registry, states, "It's
the lifestyle factors that are the primary risk factors for disease."
He says lifestyle is far and away the biggest cause of cancer, but it's
not where people usually look.

Campo's Weight-loss Study Cited

efforts to educate readers about weight loss, a study led by SHELLY
CAMPO, assistant professor of community and behavioral health,

Editorial: UI Not Quitting in Its Fight to Keep Quitline

Tobacco Use Prevention and Control to provide a clearer account of why
Iowans looking to quit smoking are better served by an out-of-state
program than one operated by UI health officials.

Diversity Festival Brings Sunshine to Iowa City
The 18th annual Celebrating Cultural Diversity Festival will be held
on Sunday, Feb. 24 from noon to 5 p.m. at the University Field House.
Enjoy ethnic food, folk dancing, and a little Kojokan Samurai Dojo
sword fighting. Admission is free and open to the public.

USA TODAY 'All-Stars' Pursue Public Health
Each February, USA TODAY names 20 undergraduate students to the
All-USA College Academic Team. The newspaper recognizes these students
for excellence in scholarship as well as their drive to extend their
intellectual abilities beyond the classroom to benefit society. In
2008, a remarkable number of these young scholars are devoting
themselves to pursuits that improve the health of populations.

applications for pilot and feasibility grants in translational research. This year up to four pilot grants will be awarded for up to $50,000 for one year.

Reminder: Heartland Center Seeks Proposals by March 3
The Heartland Center for Occupational Health and Safety is accepting
research proposals for pilot project funding from doctoral and
postdoctoral trainees, occupational medicine residents, junior
faculty, and faculty new to the field of occupational health and
safety. The submission deadline for research proposals is Monday,
March 3.

Reminder: Great Plains Center Seeks Proposals
The Great Plains Center for Agricultural Health is currently seeking
proposals for its feasibility/pilot project grant program. Total
funding up to $50,000 will be available for new feasibility/pilot
projects this year. Individual project awards will range up to
$20,000. The deadline for application is March 31.

The Allan Rosenfield Global Health Fellowship provides international
training opportunities for recent graduates of ASPH member accredited
schools of public health (M.P.H. and doctoral level). Early career

health are also eligible to apply. The deadline for application is
April 1.

Founder of Farm Safety 4 Just Kids and former member of the CPH Board
of Advisors, MARILYN ADAMS of Earlham, Iowa, has been named one of the
top three winning heroes in the 6th Annual Volvo for Life Awards.
Adams is being recognized in the program’s Safety category and will
receive a $100,000 contribution to the charity of her choice.
