Study: Increased Risks for Women Three Years After Ending Hormone Therapy
Women who received estrogen plus progestin as part of a major clinical
trial on the benefits and risks of hormone therapy had a higher risk
of breast cancer and other conditions three years after the study was
discontinued. ROBERT WALLACE, professor of epidemiology, was a study
investigator. The study included 1,100 Iowa women.

Wallace Comments on WHI Follow-up Study
(Voice of America News, 3/4/2008)
The results of a follow-up investigation to the Women's Health Initiative study show that older women who used hormone therapy to ease the symptoms of
menopause and then discontinued it remain at an increased risk of cancer.
The story quotes ROBERT WALLACE, professor of epidemiology and one of
the study's investigators. Wallace is cited in similar stories on the web sites of
several other media outlets in Boston, Arizona, Florida, Maine,
Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, and others.

Invitation to the 2008 Hoover-Wallace Dinner
The 2008 Hoover-Wallace Dinner to Honor Exceptional Humanitarian and
Public Service will take place on April 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Coralville
Marriott. The University's Ignacio Ponseti, professor emeritus of
orthopaedics, will be honored along with Senator John Culver and

Students Seek Volunteers for Public Health Campaign
Several MPH students have received a $2,000 grant from the Association
of Schools of Public Health to create a publicity campaign for Public
Health Week. "This Is Public Health: Get the Picture," will raise
awareness about public health through three community projects.
Faculty, staff, and students are invited to participate.

Nominations Now Accepted for Hsu-Li Distinguished Lectureship
The Department of Epidemiology is now accepting nominations for the
Hsu-Li Distinguished Lectureship in International Epidemiology.
The deadline for nominations is April 30, 2008. Complete details and a

CPH Flexible Pay Awards: Nominations Due March 15
Nominations are now being accepted for the third quarter Flexible Pay
Awards. The awards are aimed at recognizing exceptional performance
among non-organized professional and scientific staff. Nominations for
the Exceptional Performance Award and SPOT Performance Award must be
initiated by a supervisor and are due on March 15. For more

Deadline Extended: Research Week Poster Submissions
Research Week 2008: Innate Immunity will be held April 1-2. The
deadline for poster submissions has been extended to March 17. A $350
award will be given to the best CPH poster entry on each day. In
addition, the Center on Aging will give a $350 award to the best
research poster and abstract on aging.

Laurie Garrett, senior fellow for global health at the Council on
Foreign Relations and author of "The Coming Plague" and "Betrayal of
Trust," will hold a Q&A with students on Monday, March 10 at 2 p.m. in
1100 UCC. This event is sponsored by the UI Center for Human Rights
Careers for Change series.

The CPH Student Association will hold a general meeting on Wednesday,
