based in the Center on Aging.

Susan J.
Curry Named Dean of UI College of Public Health
Susan J. Curry, director of the Institute for Health Research
and
Policy and professor of health policy and administration in the
School
of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago, will
become
the new dean of the College of Public Health effective Aug. 1.
She
succeeds James A. Merchant, who will step down from the deanship
but
remain on the college's faculty.

The 2008 report from the State Health Registry of Iowa projects
16,000
new cancer cases to be diagnosed this year, an increase of 300
cases
from last year, or about five cancer cases per 1,000 Iowans.

The Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination will

"Keep It Small, Keep It All: Cultivating the Bioeconomy at the

Scale" on Tuesday, April 8, at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown
Iowa
City. Speakers will address local energy options; the economic,
health, and environmental impact of local food production and
distribution; and policies that promote and hinder small-scale

proposals for its feasibility/pilot project grant program. Total
funding up to $50,000 will be available for new feasibility/pilot
projects this year. Individual project awards will range up to

"Research Week 2008: Innate Immunity" will take place April
1-2 on the UI
health sciences campus. The annual event, sponsored by the Roy J.

NIH Public
Access Policy Addressed in Research Council
Chris Shaffer and Chris Childs, librarians with the Hardin Library
for
the Health Sciences, attended the CPH Research Council meeting
on
Thursday, March 27 to review the new NIH Public Access Policy.
This
policy, which requires scientists to submit journal articles
that
arise from NIH funding to a digital archive, takes effect for
all
manuscripts accepted for publication on or after April 7, 2008.

for a single $500 scholarship to attend a U.S. or foreign global
health conference or meeting during 2008. Applications are due by 5:00

Screening Update for New International Students
The UI Student Health TB Surveillance Program reports that
screening
for tuberculosis for all new international students will be
conducted
using the QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT-G) test. The QFT-G test
replaces
the TB skin test. The TB Facilitator Newsletter, published by
Student
Health, provides additional information about TB, including details
of
the screening test now in use for new international students.

Health hosted a recognition event on Tuesday, March 25. About 40
CPH
students attended, along with department heads, directors of
graduate
studies, and graduate program coordinators. TANYA UDEN-HOLMAN,
associate dean for education and student affairs, formally
recognized
and thanked the many student association leaders who were
present.
