Students Promote Public Health

To mark National Public Health Week, about 20 College of Public Health
students put together a public health photo display available for
viewing this week in the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
"As public health students, we feel the majority of the general public
doesn't know what public health is," said Master of Public Health

Tuesday, April 8 to mark National Public Health Week at the State
Capitol.

Photos Help Community "Get the Picture" of Public Health
There’s still time to view the collection of photographs taken by CPH
students as part of the student-led campaign, “This Is Public Health:
Get the Picture?” In honor of National Public Health Week, the photos
depicting public health services and issues will remain on display in
the Fountain Entrance Lobby of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics
through the end of today. Additionally, select photos, along with
public health collages created by local elementary school students,
will be on view at Coral Ridge Mall during Family Free Friday Night
from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 25. Visit the link below to view an online

Serving Up Ideas for Healthier School Lunches
The 2nd Annual Johnson County Local Food Summit, "Changing the Face of
School Lunch: Thinking Outside the Tray," will take place Thursday,
April 24, from 3 to 6 p.m. at West High School in Iowa City. The free
program, co-sponsored by the College of Public Health and featuring
faculty members LINDA SNETSELAAR and BETSY CHRISCHILLES, will focus on
how school communities can work together to provide more wholesome,
nutritious, and delicious food. The registration deadline is Thursday, April 17.

Spring Colloquium Is Set for April 24
The Spring Colloquium sponsored by the Institute for Public Health
Practice will take place Thursday, April 24, from 4 to 6 p.m. in
the Clasen Board Room, 1329 John W. Colloton Pavilion, at the
University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Registration is requested by Thursday,
April 17.

Take the Habitat for Humanity Housing Challenge
The annual Habitat for Humanity Housing Challenge will take place
Wednesday, April 16 from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Hubbard Park on the
UI campus. Student groups will build a city of cardboard homes to
raise awareness of the inadequate housing that exists across the
world.

NIH Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is notifying all principal
investigators holding specific types of NIH research grants that funds
are available for administrative supplements to improve the diversity
of the research workforce by supporting and recruiting students,
postdoctorates, and eligible investigators from groups that have been
shown to be underrepresented.

Graduate Diversity Scholarship Applications Due April 30
The Graduate Diversity Scholarship program is designed to
competitively award tuition scholarships to graduate students from
among groups disadvantaged and/or underrepresented in their fields of
graduate study. Applications are due to the Graduate College by Wednesday,
April 30. For additional information, contact Joe Coulter, professor and
association dean for diversity, at joe-coulter@uiowa.edu.

Apply Now for a Student Scholarship to Attend the SOPHE Meeting
Students members of SOPHE are invited to apply for a Student Support
Scholarship (up to $500 to be reimbursed) to attend the SOPHE Mid-Year
Meeting in Chicago May 21-24. Applications for student support are due
in the national SOPHE office no later than Tuesday, April 15, 2008. Click on

Free Child Care for Finals
Free child care for student families will be available on selected
days in May before and during finals. Care will be provided at Little
Angels Learning Center Child Care (214 East Jefferson St. in Iowa
City) for infants through school-age children. Registration is
necessary to reserve your child care slot. The service is offered by
Little Angels Learning Center and the UI Family Services Office.

IT Update

IT Office Outlines Plans for SSN Policy Compliance
The University of Iowa has initiated a policy to reduce and/or
eliminate the use of Social Security Numbers (SSN) for identification
purposes by June 30, 2008. In the coming weeks, the College of Public
Health Office of Information Technology plans to deploy software to
aid in the detection of SSN information within the CPH computer
network.
