Researchers in the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Institute at the
University of Iowa have been awarded a $1.2 million National
Institutes of Health grant to investigate the toxicity of inhaled
nanomaterials.

Charles M. Helms, M.D., Ph.D., professor of internal medicine in the
UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, will present
"Interpandemic Influenza Vaccination Rates in Hospital Health Care
Workers: Implications for Pandemic Preparedness" at 12:30 p.m. Monday,
April 28, in Room 2117 of the UI Medical Education and Research

Ellen K. Silbergeld, professor of environmental health sciences at the
Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, will
present "Public Health Impacts of Industrial Food Animal Production"

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the UI Center on Aging is
bringing back its popular "Wines of Iowa" class for people interested
in the state's burgeoning wine industry.

CPH Student Receives UI WISE Program Travel Grant
The UI Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program has announced
fall semester award recipients of its Dr. Eunice Schuytema Beam Travel
Grant Program. The award winners, including SUHONG ZHANG, a CPH
doctoral student studying public health and biostatistics, each
receive $250 toward travel to a professional meeting to present
scholarly work.

Smoking puts older women at significant risk for loss of DNA repair
proteins that are critical for defending against development of some
colorectal cancers, according to research based on data from the Iowa

humans are the cause of it, said DAVID OSTERBERG, associate professor
of occupational and environmental health. Osterberg was the featured
speaker at a University Hygienic Laboratory luncheon held in honor of
National Public Health Week.

Donham Comments on Proposed Air Quality Rule

A story about the Environmental Protection Agency's proposal to end
monitoring of animal-waste emissions quotes KELLEY DONHAM, professor
of occupational and environmental health. The current policy gives
residents some "feeling of control in their neighborhoods" and can
provide guidance in deciding where farms should be located, Donham
said. This Associated Press story appeared on multiple news
organization’s web sites.

Food Summit to Focus on School Lunches

Food that is cheap in the short term can be costly in the long-run,
organizers of a local food summit said. The summit is co-sponsored by
the College of Public Health. Panelists include LINDA SNETSELAAR,
interim head of community and behavioral health, and TRUDY BURNS,
professor of epidemiology.

Project to Study Nano Tech, Health
(The Daily Iowan, 4/16/2008)
Researchers at the UI Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Institute have
been given a $1.2 million research grant to study the toxicity of
inhaled nanomaterials. PATRICK O'SHAUGHNESSY, associate professor of
occupational and environmental health, said the main concern regarding
nanomaterials is that because of their small size, the particles could
easily travel into the lower lungs, and possibly enter the bloodstream
and move throughout the body.

UI Study on Hog Confinement Facilities Impact Cited
(The Daily Republic, 4/17/2008)
Residents protesting the construction of a hog confinement facility
near Marty, S.D., are reviewing studies on the effects of concentrated
animal feeding operations, including a 2002 study by The University of
Iowa that was commissioned by then-Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack. The Daily
Republic is published in Mitchell, S.D.

Global Health Campus Hosts Program on Developmental Disabilities
On Saturday, April 12, the UI Global Health Campus project, led by TOM
COOK, professor of occupational and environmental health, hosted an
online workshop and training program with Centro Ann Sullivan del Peru
(CASP), a school in Lima, Peru, serving students with developmental
disabilities. The program connected participants from 12 sites in Peru
with additional participants in Guatemala and the United States. A
total of 450 people took part in the workshop. "Topics dealt with
public policy and attitudes about managing children with 'different
abilities,' such as autism and Down syndrome," said Cook. "It was a
really terrific session." A recording of the April 12 session and
other Global Health Campus programs can be found at

PCB Workshop: New Knowledge Gained from Old Pollutants
The fifth PCB (Polychlorinated Biphenyl) Workshop will be held May
18-22, 2008, at the Coralville Marriott Hotel and Convention Center.
This workshop will bring together the latest information on the
chemical, physical, and biomedical aspects of these environmental
pollutants. Scientists, post docs, and students of varied backgrounds
are encouraged to participate. Registration is required.

Epi Food Drive a Success
The "Top Ten Food Drive," co-sponsored by the Epidemiology Staff
Council and the Epidemiology Student Association, collected more than
300 pounds of donations for the Johnson County Crisis Center Food
Bank. The "Top Ten" theme was used to emphasize items identified by
the center as those most needed (canned fruit, canned vegetables,
canned meat, canned soup, pasta, jam or jelly, toilet paper, rice,
potato products, and juice). Donation boxes were set up at seven
campus locations where Department of Epidemiology administration,
student, or research staff are located. The food drive was conducted
as part of National Public Health Week.

fight cancer, prevent birth defects and premature birth, donate to the
community food bank (and see some Hawkeye football), or support local
hospice services.

Shake, Rattle, and Roll: USGS Earthquake Maps
Did you feel that? The Iowa City area has been swaying to a few
tremors today due to a 5.4 magnitude earthquake occurring at 4:37 a.m
followed by a 4.6 magnitude tremor at 10:14 a.m. The epicenter of both
quakes were located in southern Illinois. Visit the U.S. Geological
Survey site to view maps and details.

National Public Health Observance

April Is Sexual Assault Awareness Month
According to national statistics, one in four women and one in six men
will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime. As part of Sexual
Assault Awareness Month, the Clothesline Project will be on display at
the UI Pentacrest from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 23. The
project is a visual display of 450 t-shirts designed by victims of
violence and their friends and families The display is sponsored by
the UI Global Health Club and the Rape Victim Advocacy Program.

UI Bridging Fiesta
The third annual UI Bridging Fiesta celebrates the diversity in
the University community. The event--an international talent
show designed to promote peaceful coexistence among students,
staff, and faculty--will feature Scottish bagpipes, Nubian songs
from Sudan, and performances of Indian, West African, Rwandan, and
Chinese dances. Event co-sponsors include UI Student Government,
UI International Programs, and the UI Office of International
Students and Scholars.
