with Cedar Rapids Community Health Free Clinic and the Iowa City Free
Medical Clinic to hold a free, half-day continuing education program
April 29 for health care professionals who treat patients through the
free clinics.

Expanding the emergency backup plan for newborn screening (NBS)
developed by the University Hygienic Laboratory and the Missouri State
Public Health Laboratory was the focus of the second annual Heartland
NBS Laboratory Workshop, held April 17-18 in Jefferson City, Mo.

UI Study on Heart Attack, Stroke Invites Participants
People age 45 and older who have had a stroke, heart attack, chest
pain, or heart-related surgery are invited to participate in a
University of Iowa research study on preventing these conditions and
related complications.

John Lundell, deputy director of the UI Injury Prevention Research Center
 (IPRC), received the Ellen R. Schmidt Award from the State and Territorial Injury
Prevention Directors Association at the national organization's annual dinner

Livestock Lobby Meddled in Study, Authors Contend
(Des Moines Register, 4/30/2008)
A 2-year study by the Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal
Production concluded that the industry needs a vast overhaul that
includes banning the use of antibiotics as a growth stimulant and
giving local governments zoning power over often controversial
developments. College of Public Health Dean JAMES MERCHANT, who served
on the commission, said that research into health problems associated
with animal confinements needs to continue but that previous studies
have already clearly shown public health risks. "We don't have to wait
for more research to take some of these actions," he said.

Fisher, Donham Working to Improve Farm Health and Safety
(Spencer Daily Reporter, 4/30/2008)
Kristi Fisher, a former UI student and staff member now living and
working near Spencer, Iowa, continues to collaborate with KELLEY
DONHAM, professor of occupational and environmental health, and the
AgriSafe network of health clinics to provide rural occupational
health service for farmers, their families, and farm workers.

Fisher Comments on Statewide Smoking Ban
(Iowa City Press-Citizen, 5/2/2008)
A statewide smoking ban that takes effect July 1 will apply to
virtually all public places. "It's a huge victory for all Iowans and
for public health," said EILEEN FISHER, a board member and founder of
Clean Air for Everyone Johnson County. Fisher also is an associate
research scientist in the Department of Occupational and Environmental
Health.

Special CPH Faculty Meeting Today — Welcome Incoming Dean Curry
A special College of Public Health faculty meeting will be held today
at 3:30 p.m. in 1117 MERF to welcome incoming Dean Susan Curry. In
addition, Rodney Lehnertz, director of UI Planning, Design and
Construction, will be present to discuss the Oakdale Campus Master
Plan and provide an update on the College of Public Health Academic
Building. A reception for Dean Curry will begin at approximately 4:30
p.m. in the lobby outside 1117 MERF. Open to all CPH faculty.

UI Holds Diversity Leadership Conference
The UI Diversity Leadership Conference, "Symbol to Substance:
Recruitment to Retention" will be held Thursday, May 15, 8:30 a.m. to
4:30 p.m., in Room 2520D UCC. Speakers include Sonel Y. Shropshire,
president, The Academic Network, Inc.; Sally Mason, president, The
University of Iowa; and Steve McGuire, professor, UI School of Art and

On April 29 the Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production
released a study concluding that the current industrial farm animal
production system often poses unacceptable risks to public health, the
environment, and the welfare of the animals themselves. The full
report, "Putting Meat on The Table: Industrial Farm Animal Production
in America," is now available online. CPH Dean JAMES MERCHANT served
