Livestock Lobby Meddled in Study, Authors

A 2-year study by the Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal
Production concluded that the industry needs a vast overhaul
that
includes banning the use of antibiotics as a growth stimulant
and
giving local governments zoning power over often controversial
developments. College of Public Health Dean JAMES MERCHANT, who
served
on the commission, said that research into health problems
associated
with animal confinements needs to continue but that previous
studies
have already clearly shown public health risks. "We don't have to
wait
for more research to take some of these actions," he said.

working near Spencer, Iowa, continues to collaborate with
KELLEY
DONHAM, professor of occupational and environmental health, and

AgriSafe network of health clinics to provide rural

health service for farmers, their families, and farm workers.

Comments on Statewide Smoking Ban
(Iowa City Press-Citizen, 5/2/2008)
A statewide smoking ban that takes effect July 1 will apply to
virtually all public places. "It's a huge victory for all Iowans
and
for public health," said EILEEN FISHER, a board member and founder
of
Clean Air for Everyone Johnson County. Fisher also is an
associate
research scientist in the Department of Occupational and
Environmental
Health.

Special CPH Faculty Meeting Today Welcome Incoming Dean CurryA special College of Public Health faculty meeting will be held today
at 3:30 p.m. in 1117 MERF to welcome incoming Dean Susan Curry. In
addition, Rodney Lehnertz, director of UI Planning, Design and
Construction, will be present to discuss the Oakdale Campus Master
Plan and provide an update on the College of Public Health Academic
Building. A reception for Dean Curry will begin at approximately 4:30
p.m. in the lobby outside 1117 MERF. Open to all CPH faculty.

Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal ProductionOn April 29 the Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production
released a study concluding that the current industrial farm animal
production system often poses unacceptable risks to public health, the
environment, and the welfare of the animals themselves. The full
report, "Putting Meat on The Table: Industrial Farm Animal Production
in America," is now available online. CPH Dean JAMES MERCHANT served
on the commission.
