where Iowa wineries began: Summerset Winery in Indianola. Join the
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the UI to learn the history of
Iowa wines from the owner of one of state's oldest wineries.

$458,939
grant from The Commonwealth Fund to help improve hospital
quality
through leadership assessment and intervention.

Investigators Studying Occupational and Environmental
Health
(Iowa Public Radio, 5/12/2008)
Iowa Public Radio's "Talk at Twelve" program recently featured two
UI
investigators studying the state's occupational and
environmental
health issues. Pete Weyer, associate director of the UI Center
for
Health Effects of Environmental Contamination (CHEEC), talked about
the
state of Iowa's rural well water. In the second half of the
show,
LAURENCE FUORTES, professor of occupational and environmental
health,
talked about his studies assessing the health of current and
former
employees of Iowa's weapons manufacturing facilities.

Munitions Workers
(The Daily Iowan, 5/16/2008)
Researchers in the College of Public Health, including LAURENCE
FUORTES and BILL FIELD, have spent two years working on the Iowa
Army
Ammunitions Plant Munitions Workers Study to determine whether
munitions-related work at the plant increased mortality or
cancer
rates for former workers.

Proposed Benefit Changes Discussed at Staff Council MeetingAt a UI Staff Council meeting held May 14, Rick Borchard, a co-chair
of the UI Funded Retirement and Insurance Committee (FRIC), presented
proposed changes to the current employee flex benefit program.
Comments on the proposal can be sent to the UI Staff Council or FRIC
members.

Conference: Advance Registration Opens May 27
Advance registration and housing will open May 27 for the 2008
APHA
conference to be held October 25-29 in San Diego, Calif. The
conference
theme, "Public Health Without Borders," will explore
transnational
public health and provide an opportunity for better understanding
of
the aspects of multiculturalism that promote healthy living.

The 2008 Iowa Arts Festival will take place June 6-8 in downtown
Iowa
City. The festival is a free community celebration featuring over

local and regional artists displaying and selling their artwork,
along
with live music and a variety of activities and entertainment

children and families.

Be Smoke-Free July 1
Under the Smoke-Free Air Act signed by Iowa Governor Chet Culver
on
April 15, smoking will be banned everywhere on the University of
Iowa
campus on July 1, 2008. The UI offers a number of resources for
faculty, staff, and students who want to quit smoking,
including
smoking cessation services, counseling, and access to various
therapy
products.
