About OEH

Overview

Faculty, staff, and students in the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health (OEH) have a fundamental interest in the health and safety of rural people, currently realized in areas of investigation such as:

  • Musculoskeletal disorders of farm, factory, and office workers
  • Measurement of biotoxins in the environment
  • Health effects of bioaerosols on farmers and other workers
  • Metabolism of PCB’s
  • Control measures for occupational exposures
  • Strategies to prevent injuries at work and in the community.

We engage in research, education, and outreach activities across Iowa, throughout Federal Region VII ( Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri), and in countries of Central Europe and West Africa.

The Department is housed in a well-equipped, recently renovated research facility on the Oakdale campus about 5 miles northwest of the main campus. A free bus service connects the University’s Oakdale and main campuses.

With tuition and stipend support, students in OEH are working toward:

  • master’s or doctoral degrees in occupational and environmental health
  • master’s or doctoral degrees specializing in industrial hygiene
  • master of public health degrees in occupational and environmental health, and
  • master of public health degrees specializing in ergonomics
