Funding

There are many sources of funding for students. Our students are commonly supported by faculty research grants and through traineeships or pilot grants from the following Centers:

• Heartland Center for Occupational Health & Safety
  Supports graduate training in six areas: Agricultural Safety and Health; Ergonomics; Industrial Hygiene; Occupational Health Nursing; Occupational Injury Prevention Research; and Occupational Medicine Residency. Students admitted to these programs are eligible for competitively awarded traineeships. Support may be in the form of tuition, fees, and/or stipend. Funded positions sponsored by NIOSH are available for U.S. citizens only. (funding source: NIOSH)
• Environmental Health Sciences Research Center
  Provides training to predoctoral students and postdoctoral fellows in two areas:
  • Environmental Health
  • Environmental Epidemiology
    (funding source: National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences)
• Injury Prevention Research Center
  (funding source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
• Great Plains Center for Agricultural Health
  Provides support for agricultural health specialists, including industrial hygienists and occupational physicians, and post-doctoral researchers. For example, Matthew Murphy, an industrial hygiene PhD student, is studying antibiotic exposures in animal confinement facilities and pesticide exposures of vector control workers. This center also provides pilot grants to support small exploratory studies on agricultural health and safety problems.
• Iowa's Center for Agricultural Safety and Health
• Center for International Rural and Environmental Health
  Provides opportunities for IH students to interact with trainees from Central and Eastern Europe, and also makes fellowships available to graduate students in industrial hygiene and related health professions. Awards of up to $5000 are available each summer to enable students to gain international experience in public health, environmental health, or occupational health through a network of collaborating research institutions. • Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination
• CEGRER

Individual grants obtained by faculty are another source of student support. For example:

• A Special Emphasis Research Career Award (SERCA) grant directed by Dr. Patrick O’Shaughnessy has supported two IH students.
• The research of a PhD student is supported by grant obtained by Dr. Heitbrink to evaluate engineering controls to reduce dust exposures of construction workers tuck-pointing brickwork.
