Ph.D. Degree Options


Ph.D. Degree in Agricultural Safety & Health
The Agricultural Safety and HealthPhD will offer specialized training at the doctoral level to prepare individuals for academic, research and policy-making careers in occupational and environmental health with a specialty in agricultural safety and health. This program will create the next generation of specialists and leaders in this growing field.

Ph.D. Degree in Industrial Hygiene
This program trains individuals to conduct and supervise research or to manage advanced applied programs in academic, governmental, or private industrial hygiene settings. The overall goal of the program is to contribute to occupational disease prevention and injury prevention in industrial, environmental or agricultural sectors.

Ph.D. Degree in Occupational and Environmental Health
This program prepares students for careers in environmental and occupational health. Graduates will be able to assume responsibility for the development and basic administration of environmental and occupational health programs, and will qualify for beginning faculty positions in academic environmental health departments.

Areas of focus:

  • Ergonomics
    Graduate study in the Ergonomics Training Program at the Heartland Center for Occupational Health and Safety combines the perspectives and principles of both health science and engineering and provides students with the interdisciplinary knowledge and practical skills needed to solve the ergonomic challenges facing workplaces in the 21st century. 

  • Occupational Injury Prevention
    The Occupational Injury Prevention Research (OIPR) program at the Heartland Center prepares graduate students to meet the need for new academic faculty in the field of occupational injury prevention.

  • Occupational Epidemiology
    The Occupational Epidemiology Training Program at the Heartland Center prepares graduate students to meet the need for new academic faculty and practitioners in the field of Occupational Epidemiology.

  • Environmental Toxicology
    Environmental Toxicology is an optional focus area for the PhD in Occupational and Environmental Health. OEH students in this focus area will choose coursework and will establish research topics in their specific area of interest in Environmental Toxicology.

    Students interested in the PhD in Human Toxicology, which is a UI Graduate College interdisciplinary program, should visit the Human Toxicology website for more information.
