My original research training involved the application of engineering
methods to inhalation toxicology experiments. Here at the University
of Iowa, I have helped to develop exposure systems involving gases
and aerosols in both small chambers forrodents and a large room-sized
chamber for human studies. I am currently interested in the generation
and analysis of nanoparticles. As co-investigator of a recent EPA
grant on that topic I plan to pursue research in that area over
the next 3 years with additional funding from NIOSH sought in the
near future.
I am also using a small test chamber to do side-by-side comparisons
of four sampling devices and aerosol photometers commonly used by
industrial hygienists to measure aerosol concentrations in workplaces.
Another interest is in the use of mathematical models to determine
the spatial variability of pollutants both indoors, with the use
of a computational fluid dynamics software package, and outdoors
with the use of plume dispersion model.
I am currently contributing to the funding of 3 PhD students and
one undergraduate.
