New findings regarding alcohol and tobacco use patterns in homosexually and heterosexually experienced women in California.

  • Many studies point out the comparatively higher use of alcohol and tobacco among lesbian and bisexual women.
  • A recent study by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles investigated not only the between group differences, but also the differences within the groups that were not exclusively heterosexual.
  • The study found that although lesbian and bisexual women on average smoke more and drink more alcohol, there is considerable variation within the age-strata of this group.
  • Homosexually experienced women between 26-35 drank more, more often, binge and problem drank more, than exclusively heterosexual women in the same age range.
  • The differences between homosexually experienced and inexperienced women in other age groups were, with few exceptions, not statistically significant.
  • This study suggests that sexuality alone may not a good predictor for alcohol and tobacco consumption and that further research on within group differences among lesbian and bisexual women.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - College-aged women who say they are attracted to women are more likely to use drugs, attempt suicide and adopt other risky behaviors than their male peers who have sex with men, new research shows. This finding suggests that homosexual women, on average, are perhaps more troubled than homosexual men, and people working to help homosexuals and bisexuals should especially target their efforts toward women.
