The Prairielands ATTC is proud of several accomplishments related to Native Americans and substance use issues in our region:

  • Trained health care professionals in South Dakota, and North Dakota on substance abuse issues in Native American populations.
  • Sought the wisdom of a group of Native American elders in North Dakota to create a treatment management plan for individual reservations and individual cultural groups dealing with substance use issues on each reservation.
  • Collaborated with the University of North Dakota Indian Association to develop the program for the Wicipi Pow-Wow activities every Apri
  • PATTC- SD Native American programs and partnerships in South Dakota:
    • ICRC written and oral exam prep training programs
      • Purpose: To Increase the the number of counselor trainees, especially Native American counselor trainees who pass the IC&RC exam.
      • As a result, more and more counselor trainees are now passing the exam and become certified counselors. Because of the success of this program, substance abuse treatment programs and counselor trainees are requesting the pre-exam written and oral training programs
    • ADAS module course offerings at Reservation sites
    • Native American group: Correctional institution
    • Upper Plains Summer Insititute
    • Red Road Gathering
  • AI/AN Resource Toolkit Project collaborated between Dr. Lisa Najavits (Boston, VA), VA in Black Hills and PATTC
  • Adberdeen Area Indian Health Service and Tribal Alcohol/Substance Abuse Program

  • April 24-26 - Indian Education Summit - Pierre, SD sponsored by the State of South Dakota Department of Education
  • The 2nd annual Indian Education Summit, featured workgroup sessions on topics such as parental involvement, school climate, Lakota language, Lakota culture and what has been found to work in various schools. Gov. Mike Rounds (R) gave the keynote address on Monday. He said the best solutions to improve Indian education come from the local level. Learn More...

The University of South Dakota Alcohol and Drug Abuse Studies Course, Ethical & Legal Issues in the Alcohol/Drug Profession (1 hour of undergraduate credit) was delivered on the Sisseton-Wahpeton Reservation.
