The
National Institutes of Health's National Library of Medicine
has launched a Web site addressing the special health concerns
of the 4 million Americans who claim American Indian or Alaska
Native ancestry. For example, NIH notes, Native Americans are
2.6 times more likely to have diabetes as non-Hispanic whites
of a similar age. They also have a greater mortality risk for
tuberculosis, suicide, pneumonia, alcoholism and influenza
than the average population. The American Indian Health site
brings together pertinent health and medical resources, including
consumer health information, research results, traditional
healing resources, and links to other Web sites. Much of it
has been assembled from other National Library of Medicine
resources such as PubMed and MedlinePlus.

The National Center for

National Center for American Indian and Alaska Native Mental Health
Research (NCAIANMHR), a program in the Department of Psychiatry,
is one of four minority mental health research Centers. The NCAIANMHR
is sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health and is
the only program of this type in the country focusing specifically
on American Indian and Alaska Native populations.
North Dakota Indian Affairs Commission

Commission is the liaison between the Executive Branch and the
Tribes in North Dakota. Duties include mediation service with
the Tribes and State and working with other state agencies regarding
proper protocol in working with Indian people and Tribal governments.
