Buprenorphine Treatment
A Training for Multidisciplinary Addiction Professionals

  • The Buprenorphine Awareness Blending Team was charged with developing an awareness training package for multidisciplinary (non-physician) addiction professionals. The primary goal of this training package is to create awareness about buprenorphine among multidisciplinary addiction professionals.

  • Pilot: Buprenorphine and Office-Based Treatment of Opioid Dependence; Opiate Awareness: Assessment and Treatment. Held on August 17-18, 2004, Omaha, Nebraska. The product was released for dissemination in December, 2004.
  • Training Package Contents:
    • A 6-hour classroom training program provding an overview of buprenorphine treatment
    • A self-paced CD-ROM awareness course on buprenorphine treatment
    • An annotated bibliography and research articles.

S.M.A.R.T. Treatment Planning Utilizing the Addiction Severity Index (ASI): Making Required Data Collection Useful"

  • The primary goal of this training package is to transform required “paperwork” into clinically useful information. The Addiction Severity Index (ASI) is one of the most widely used tools for the assessment of substance use-related problems.

    • Examines how ASI information can be used for clinical applications and assist in program evaluation activities

    • Defines guidelines and legal considerations in documenting client status

Motivational Interviewing Assessment: Supervisory Tools for Enhancing Proficiency (MIA:STEP)

  • A new package of treatment improvement products has emerged from the work of the NIDA Clinical Trials Network (CTN). A Motivational Interviewing Assessment protocol has produced improvements in frequency of client attendance and retention in treatment during the first month of care, two predictors of positive treatment outcome.

    • Brief materials help introduce the MI Assessment protocol to key stakeholders.
    • MI Assessment Protocol provides a full description of the protocol, research report on the results of the NIDA clinical trials, talking points and PowerPoint slides.
    • Teaching Tools for Assessing and Enhancing MI Skills include brief handouts describing principles and skills plus self-assessment review criteria.
    • Supervisor Tape Rating Guide describes a system for monitoring clinician MI adherence and competence.
    • Demonstration Materials include demonstration tapes in English and Spanish, MI Assessment transcripts, completed skill rating worksheets, feedback forms, and skill development plans.
    • Supervisor Training Curriculum for a 10-hour event focuses on an overview of how to best utilize the entire MIA:STEP package plus skill development in the rating of recorded MI Assessment interviews and their use in building counselor skills

Short-Term Opioid Withdrawal Using Buprenorphine: Findings and Strategies from a NIDA Clinical Trials Network Study

  • The primary goal of this training package is to instruct providers on the administration of a 13-day buprenorphine taper for opioid dependent patients. Topics will include methods of evaluation and induction, the taper schedule, and use of ancillary medications during treatment.

Promoting Awareness of Motivational Incentives

  • The Promoting Awareness of Motivational Incentive Blending Team has been tasked with developing awareness materials (CD, PowerPoint, Resources, Video). Incentives used as interventions provide tangible rewards to patients for reaching concrete targeted behaviors, and thus is based firmly in sound principles of behavioral pharmacology.
