Binge drinking and underage drinking in the Prairielands
Binge drinking and underage drinking is an epidemic problem that affects the entire country. However, geographically, the Prairielands, along with the rest of the Midwest, is part of the region where binge drinking levels reside at peak levels. Demographics contribute to this fact but so do more workable factors, for instance lack of other forms of recreation. Other issues are of particular concern to this region as well. For instance, drunkenness can be especially dangerous in rural areas where help or medical assistance may not be nearby. Limited daylight and long, cold winters increases the risk for serious consequences associated with binge and underage drinking use. Long distances and lack of adequate public transportation contributes to a higher risk for drunk driving and alcohol related traffic injuries. Any effort to curb binge drinking and underage drinking in the Prairielands region must take into account these special circumstances and direct resources toward preventing and reducing the harm they cause. Prairielands ATTC's research focuses on identifying correlates of alcohol related consequences so that they can aid in designing successful prevention programs. The special characteristics in the Prairielands will be part of these research efforts.
