Careers in Public Health

Public health is an interdisciplinary field made up of a wide range of professionals, including physicians, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, social workers, nutritionists, environmental scientists, health educators, biostatisticians, epidemiologists, health service administrators, and many others. What unites public health practitioners is the shared goal of preventing disease and injury and promoting healthy practices among entire populations.

The need for public health practitioners is strong — a growing and aging population has fueled the demand for health services, a sector the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics ranks among the fastest-growing industries. Public health professionals find employment in many areas, including county and state health departments, hospitals, universities, private companies, federal agencies, and international organizations.
