Department of Biostatistics Center Summaries

Biostatistics Consulting Center

The Department of Biostatistics includes the Biostatistics Consulting Center that was originally established to provide bio-statistical consulting to the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. The Center currently provides expert statistical consulting and data management services to researchers across the University of Iowa, including those in the Colleges of Public Health, Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy and Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Faculty and student consultants from the Biostatistics Consulting Center work with investigators during all phases of research: proposal development, study design, data form or questionnaire development, data entry, data management, statistical analysis, and report preparation. Collaborations range from brief consultations to long-term collaborative research.

The Biostatistics Consulting Center:

  • assists with grant proposal development,
  • assists in study design,
  • develops efficient data management strategies,
  • performs appropriate statistical analysis,
  • assists in writing reports for scientific publication.

Center for Public Health Statistics

The Center for Public Health Statistics (CPHS) was established in March 1999 under the strategic plan for the University of Iowa College of Public Health. Administratively designated as a collegiate center, the CPHS functions collaboratively with collegiate departments and centers, University groups, and outside entities in fulfillment of its mission. The mission of the Center is to (1) collect, analyze, and disseminate public health data in relation to the research, teaching, and service missions of the College of Public Health, (2) develop collaborative relationships in the area of public health statistics, and (3) represent the College of Public Health to the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) with respect to issues involving public health data. The CPHS takes the lead for the College in producing the biennial edition of the Iowa Health Fact Book and has responsibility for the UI/Wellmark Data Repository. The Iowa Health Fact Book is a compilation of county-specific health indicators, health resources, and facts of interest to public health professionals in Iowa, produced in partnership with the IDPH. The UI/Wellmark Data Repository is a longitudinal database of administrative health insurance claim records. The CPHS works collaboratively with the IDPH across the state on screening programs for cardiovascular disease and breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer targeted to low-income Iowans. In addition, the Center is actively engaged in a number of federally-funded research projects in several areas of public health, providing biostatistical expertise, data analysis support, and custom web applications.

Clinical Trials Statistical and Data Management Center

The Department of Biostatistics also includes the Clinical Trials Statistical and Data Management Center (CTSDMC) that was established for the purpose of coordinating the statistical and data management for multicenter clinical trials. The CTSDMC has a demonstrated history of assisting in the development and implementation of 12 large multicenter trials and 2 large epidemiological studies at the University of Iowa and more than 80 other academic institutions. In each of our projects, the CTSDMC has provided leadership in study design, data management, project management, and statistical analysis. We offer an experienced and professional research and support team with a proven record and well-developed strategies for supporting the development, implementation, and completion of multicenter clinical trials and the mechanistic studies associated with those trials.

A description of current projects may be viewed on the center's website.

Biostatistics Core Alliance

The Biostatistics Core Alliance is an association of biostatistical groups at The University of Iowa working together to coordinate collaborative statistical support for biomedical research.  Alliance members are highly skilled biostatisticians with expertise in data management; study design; statistical analysis of clinical, epidemiological, laboratory, and public health data; and grant and manuscript preparation. The Alliance provides a common point of access to biostatistical support for members of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science, and other biomedical programs at the University of Iowa.  An online form is provided for support requests and is used by the Alliance to match the expertise of our members to project needs.

The Department also enjoys a close relationship with the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
